Tulip Oak
Hi guys I'm researching for my HSC woodwork major project. I'm looking for timbers suitable for steam bending. So far my best option is Tulip Oak. I'm having difficulties sourcing this timber in the Sydney area. We have the facilities at school to dress the timber. Size is not that important, but the length need to be 1800. I'm making a garden swing chair with some awesome curves. Does anyone know where I could source some Tulip Oak in the Sydney area?
The school's looking at buying a bulk lot.
Thanks

Anagote timber in Marrickville may be able to help. They are on the web don't have their phone number handy.

Boutique Timbers
Try Mal at Boutique Timbers. I think he may have stock
He is going to Canberra wood show next weekend and could drop on the way down, or he delivers to Sydney each 3-4 weeks.
Tel 65858296 in the evenings, or better, send an email to [email protected]
Check the Boutique Timber website to get an idea of what he has.
regards

Hello Robyn.
Spotted Gum also lends itself to steam bending and should be available in the size you want in Sydney. The other ones described by Keith R. Bootle for steam bending in boatbuilding are Silver Ash, Myrtle Beech, Brigalow, Tulip Oak (as you know), Celery-top Pine, Silver Quandong and Tuart.
The other suggestion is that there has been steam bending done with plywood in the past and it is an avenue you may wish to research.
