I'd like to thank y'all for playing. The answer was Satin Sycomore as per Timboz's answer... native to the north queenland rainforests and New Guinea...but it does carry the trade name down south of "PNG coachwood" because it is very similar in appearance. It is however somewhat softer and easier to work apparently, though in all honesty I've never touched, smelled, weighed or eaten (don't forget the taste test) "real" coachwood to know. So quite a few of you were close but no cigars I'm afraid.
I'm going to have to play this game again methinks - I did a forum search and found only 1 hit on Satin Sycomore - posting pictures of some of the lesser known FNQ species will help to expand the knowledge base, particularly as some of them are rarely seen anymore.

Had a feeling it could have been that ,seen it a few times up north, stunning stuff ,grows well on the Danbulla range, and does look a lot different on the back-sawn grain than on the quarter-sawn though...MM
