    Default Unidentified beautiful wood

    Hello,PXL_20210125_223649779.jpg
I've only been turning for a few months now and I love it. However, I have trouble identifying wood species. I found this on the side of the road probably cut by the state. It's got a beautiful pattern. Would someone be so kind as to identify? I've heard swamp maple, hickory, and others.
Can this be identifyed for sure from you folks??PXL_20210125_223713264.jpg

Hopefully you may find a fellow spirit from the USA to assist. We Aussies don't have much experience with identification of North American woods.

Nice bit of spalting in the end grain
Could be a precursor to some pretty lumber
No idea of the species though

Well, thanks for looking. I just can't believe no one on this site can ID this wood. When it's turned it's incredible. No pics of that yet. I will post some this week.

From your neck of the woods its probably one of the Maple species (Acer) . take it to Woodcraft Manchester and get hold of someone from the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking or the Central Connecticut Woodturners both of which operate out of the Woodcraft store. And they are just down the road from you. Great bunch and very friendly.

What you probably don't realise is this forum is based in Australia, you know Down Under. There are a lot of members on here from the US and Canada, but you really need someone close to your location to id that wood. Hopefully Paul39 will see this as he is in NC and plays with a lot of your native wood.
    Welcome to the forum BTW,

    Default Intreresting spalting

No Idea what -the photos don't help. could be many things. The photos would have to cover cleaned up and ideally with a finish on it. Looks like some kinda hardwood -with some spalting.

    Default Aussie

Sorry. I didn't realize this site was run from Australia. I had someone with a lot of woodworking experience say it was Spalted Hickory. I will take some pics when I turn it tomorrow.

One thing for sure.... It isn't redgum or anything else Aussie.

If it was here I'd hazard a guess at spalted Elm or Maple both of which are street or shade tree here. Although most of the ones I have seen here have had fairly round trunks and branches. Have had some of each over the years. Looks reminiscent to the dead Elm I had the council cut down at the front of my old School of Woodcrafts some 30+ years ago.

Be interested to see how it turns up for you. I slabbed my elm for jewellery boxes. nice spalting but a bit ordinary when finished... Too dead for too long and ended up grey with dark grey spalting and the odd soft pinkish colour in spots. Should have turned it.

    Cheers - Neil

OK...so I started turning. Boy is this thing wet. I mean, water in your face wet. No sawdust though. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do from here. Should I leave the rough edge??PXL_20210204_220836836.jpgPXL_20210204_220834183.jpgPXL_20210204_220831499.jpg

Spectacular spalting. That will make a rather special bowl.

From the photo, it looks like Shell Barked Hickory.

I asked a guy in the US who mills his own timber for for all forms of woodwork, reckons from the bark it's maple

I think it's time to start drying in the microwave. 39% moisture inside, 26% on outside.PXL_20210206_181546408.jpgPXL_20210206_181539954.jpg

Thats looking like it will be a great looking bowl. Hope it dries out without problems. I kind of like the sound of unidentified beautiful wood. Over the years I've turned a few bits with no idea what they are. Did a few small root balls I found out dog walking and when people ask what wood I say dogwood.
