Hi
Have been given two pieces of timber and was wondering if anybody could
give me an idea as to the type of timber they might be
They came from a guy who used to make guns and this was possibly
to be a gun stock if this may add any light to the type of timber

My money is on blackwood going on the top photo but you need to get more light onto the timber and wet a section so that the colour and grain stand out better. That would help to identify.
cheers

Very hard to say from those photos. It looks very similar to Tasmanian Blackwood. However, you would need to sand and wet a patch and then give a close up of the grain. Even then it would still be a best guess scenario. Gun stocks are often made from exotic species in which case it could be heaps of things!
