Default Untreated structural pine in Brisbane

    Hi,
Doing some loft beds in Brisbane and wanting to use untreated pine. Apparently all the Bunnings outlets have removed the majority of sizes from their shelves.

Contacted Wilson's for a quote but after 2 days following up they didn't get back to me.

Any other places in Brisbane sell untreated, structural pine in various dimensions?

    Cheers,
    Adam

    Adam

does it have to be untreated structural pine?
Could you not make the loft beds using laminated strips ripped from finger jointed pine panels?

Bunnings, Mitre10, Home Hardware should have suitable panels in stock

Thanks Jazzy. Rang them without luck but they told me to try Lindsay Meyers and VSH timbers.

Ian - I have been told to over-engineer it to a degree as my wife is concerned. I will be attaching to studs though. This is a nice one where you could get away with panels to an extent:

    Build a Loft Bed

But doing a double for the older boy and a bit more meat wanted.

    Cheers

    This "over-engineering" business I just don't get.

That loft bed you linked to is already "over-engineered".
Primarily it is built from 3/4 "(aka 19 mm) stuff. If you must "over-engineer" to keep SWMBO happy, 22 mm sanded FJ Tassie Oak panels will be more than strong and stiff enough for the task.
The "Maple" and "pine" referred to are very common woods in North America, but expensive in Brisbane.

Structurally, the linked loft bed consists of a rectangular ladder frame supported on 2 sides at centres based on the 450 mm (?) stud spacing and at the free end by the ladder. The cross pieces of the "ladder frame" are spaced at 500 mm (20 inch) centres. The bed box then sits on this frame.

Given that you are in "humid" Brisbane, I suggest that you keep the 4 outside members of the ladder's frame and substitute 100 mm (nominal) Tassie Oak slats spaced at 150 mm centres to support the mattress directly. Doing so will allow the underside of the mattress to breathe.

Adam, I grow Hoop Pine here on my farm and own a small sawmill and can supply you with with untreated pine. Send me an email with what you require. Yes some people prefer the untreated for a variety of reasons including that it how it was used in the past. Bob

Thanks for the feedback Ian. Makes sense to me but in the end with 2 sets of beds for the boys, 1 for the girl and then wall-to-wall cabinets for the media room cost became a factor to me. Rather spend the money in the media room and getting some new toys. Because the option presented by my wife was 2 ikea loft beds and I wasn't down with that.

Bob - sent an email for future reference.
