Ive bought some veneers awhile back from a forumite here Martrix and for packaging he is awesome... no problems whatever with the veneer arriving! He packs them in a proper type box affair that keeps them protected (vital with Aussie post) and its solid as
I buy most of my veneers... well all of them nowadays... from a bloke in the states... I think the sheer bulk amount that you get at the cost you pay on ebay outweighs the postage costs... and the bloke looks after me very well indeed... if the weights down a bit on his base amount he will bung in sheets of obscure exotic veneers... like a for instance I won one of his auctions awhile back of 50sq feet of Black Walnut for $24US... the amount was just below his postage limit so he bunged in a STACK of Aforamosa a few large sheets of Redwood and some birdseye maple... his view is that if you are going to buy from him and its under the limit but the cost is going to be the same he will make sure the package has the limit in it! IF on the other hand it goes over by a few kilo he wears the added cost.
I got that way with the Aussie suppliers that I couldnt for the price justify the exhorbitant costs of the veneer they charge.
Ive got a stack of pics around here of the last batch I got... I'll see if I can find them and post some
It depends on how much you want... what plans you have for it... that sort of thing my wife wants her new kitchen cupboards to be done out in Black Walnut so for those quantities overseas is the only way... if however you only want a few small sheets then Aussies the way Martrix for sure if you want it to arrive safe without the packaging being torn or shredded or wet definantly him.

Hey Mr Dingo are you prepared to share the contact information from the US?
I probably only want .5 to 1 square metre of any one species but would buy a few different species to make it worthwhile.
What about customs, aren't you supposed plant materials when their imported?Cheers,
Howdya

Gidday howdya
Mate customs has opened the box and I should think had a look through it... as Ive found their handiwork from time to time... different tape laydowns pamphlets inside etc
But have never had any problems as Brian makes it clear what is in the box on the slip that he sticks on as hes required by law to do... declare?... I think its more when you hide something or they think something doesnt quite look right or that its obviously not what the declaration says it is that you have issues with them... but hes straight up and down about it and theres nothing in there other than the veneers and the foam stuff and newspaper that he packs around it
Cheers

Hellooooo, Shane. Can you provide more info about your US contact? First name of "Brian" alone isn't too specific. Also, does he list thicknesses?
I don't think I'd have customs issues.
Thanks in advance.

Joe Ive pm'd you... yes he lists thickness along with length and width... his veneers if split or whatever will be marked with chalk and shown on the auction and hes up front about it and says whats what in the blurb... so you know before you bid... many dont
I wont put his ebay name here since hes a small one man band and a whole bunch of people emailing him or swamping him or blowing his auctions out of the water would be a bit unsettling... so I think its best if I dont... Ive been dealing with him for around 2 years now and a nicer bloke you couldnt deal with on ebay.Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Hi all. I'm new, thought I would throw something on here.
I believe the main reasons for restrictions on importing timber and goods made of timber from overseas, is because of pests, particularly insects.
The reason why packages would be opened, whether they are declared correctly or not, would be to inspect for insects and bugs that could be living in the timber.
It's always in your best interest if ordering timber from overseas, to have the sender declare it accurately. You are potentially liable to customs fines or confiscation of your goods if your stuff is declared inaccurately (deliberately or not).
There is a wealth of info on the Australian Customs Website by the way: www.customs.gov.au/

Hi Shed Rat,
you have lots of responses, so you may not need this info, but...
I have a range of veneers, I do Post and I am way out west ( well, in Western Australia). If you would like to refer to my website, it shows the species. Best to email me if you need prices or more info.
cheers,
kerrie
