WA source of Gimlet and Salmon
Gentlemen, I'm travelling through the wheatbelt of WA and heading to Exmouth and would love to get my hands on some Gimlet and Salmon gum. I live in the Geelong area of Victoria and would like to get something I can't get/find near home. Just was wondering if anyone would know of someone who sells these timbers. A couple of years ago I was on a cattle station out of Mt.Isa and I filled my roof rake with some Gidgee and we swayed all the way home.

If you've got a chainsaw with you, there's plenty of gimlet between Norseman and the Kambalda turnoff. Mostly on the east side of the highway. Easy access to it as the bushfires that went through there a few years ago cleared most of the undergrowth. Salmon gum you can find anywhere between east of Norseman to almost Yellowdine. It is everywhere - I just go out and cut what I want. I can send you an official map that tells you where you can & can't go - and you are not allowed to fell live trees. I usually go out behind some of the mine tailings dams near Coolgardie where the land has been cleared and the trees pushed up into windrows. There's no gimlet out there, but plenty of salmon gum and a bit of blackbutt spread through it.
If you want to buy some timber, perhaps contact Kim Gent at Chunky Timber Co Kalgoorlie (link below). He sells all sorts of things made from local timbers and may be able to help you with some timber.

Another option is Djarilmari Timber Products. Family business based in Denmark, but he travels to the goldfields to collect a lot of the timber he sells.

Thank you for your reply. I went and saw Kim but he doesn’t sell any timber he even uses all his off cuts. I’ll contact Djarilmari and find out where they and have a chat with them. Thanks again.
