Which Walnut ?
I am removing several walnut trees with the view of using them for timber how do i tell what variety they are without leaves or nuts ?
Branches down to 5" diameter i am keeping for reasons i am not sure of just yet as with the root ball.
Some trees are plain in colour throughout others have dark brown heart wood .

It will be difficult to be precise with identifying the trees now without nuts. However, as most Walnuts in Australia were grown for their nuts, the trees are more likely to be one of several varieties of European Walnuts introduced for the purpose. Many were grafted onto American Black Walnut rootstock, in which case a distinct change in the bark will be visible a foot or two above the ground.
Black Walnut timber has a purplish tinge to it and occasional black streaks. European Walnut is brown with swirling figure..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
