Western Red Cedar price?
Hi guys!
I am a kind of newcomer to Australia and not familiar with local timber prices.
I have decided to replace my current aluminium windows with timber. WRC is recommended on this forum for such things.
Today I have visited a timber yard in Port Adelaide called "Australian Timber" where was asked $24.50 per metre for WRC rough board 50x120, which makes $4083 per cubic metre... I am a bit confused... From my overseas experience this is a price for some very high grade hardwood timber which can be used in fine furniture making. But WRC is softwood for carpentry...
1. Guy at timber yard is nuts, look further?
2. Price is right, welcome to Australia?
PS Sorry for my poor English.

Whaler.
I cannot help you at this stage, but if you can tell us what country you come from then we may be able to understand the pricing difficulty.
If on the other hand your are a Kiwi, then just ignore my post.

I am Russian if this can help
May be I wasn't clear. The question is: Is the 24.50 dollars per metre of western red cedar rough board 50x120mm usual price for Australian timber market or not? If yes, I will try to find another way to make my windows better. If not, I will try to find a better place to buy WRC

Whaler,
This link (Perth WA) http://www.carbatecwa.com.au/PDF/TIMBER.pdf will give you an indication of prices.
Western Red Cedar isn't cheap.

I don't know recent prices, but that seems a bit steep. While it's not DAR, you're only buying a small board rather than a cubic meter, so the yard is going to put on a fair markup; even so, that's pricy.
If you're buying in the cu.m range, you should be able to get good Aust. red cedar for that price, and that's much more expensive (like double) the WRC price!
Rob (who hasn't bought either for a while...)

welcome, your english is better than some of the aussies on here! Price sounds about right, unfortunately, but it is the best stuff to use.
I would recommend going to see a reproduction window maker. They should already have the WRC machined with the rebate and profile, probably cheaper than you could buy the R/S
Cheerseverything is something, for a reason:confused:

WRC versus Paulownia
Whaler,
I don't want make this a sales pitch in this forum but you could consider Paulownia. Do your own research but you should find that it is just as weather resistant, easy to work with, stronger and light weight. It takes stains easily so you can get your own colour.
I sell random lengths of 150x50mm RS at $15.60 per metre ex Northern NSW. Send me a personal post if you are interested. I would be happy to phone you on a land line if you wanted more information.
