was going down the road today and on a recently sold block there were a bunch of treelopers felling about 10 large sheeoaks trees (not sure witch type and 3 small sikys.

and as u do i jamed on the brakes and went to talk to the boss. he told me to speak to the owners. they informed me i could take as mutch of teh shee oak as i wanted but they wanted to keep and sell the silky and did i want to buy it.

there were 3 logs 6m long and 12" accross at the biggest with lots of branches. i offerd them $800 witch was more than they were worth considering i had to get a machine in to load them and transpot the back home. and they said hat i was trying to rip them off that silkyoak was worth $3000/cube and they estimated there was 1.3 cube of timber in the logs.

i explained to them that 3000/cube was the dry sawn price for clean sap free timber and there is a lot of work goes into sawing and drying. the would have none of it so i told them i would see if the local sawmill wanted them i will let them know and get them to send tehm a price witch will be more like 300 for the lot if they are lucky.

i am still taking the shee oaks thow. havent been back to see how mutch there is.

Have a scout around on the ground where the she oaks were cut from and find a couple of old seed capsules, from this you will be able to find out what they are. the casuarinas and allocasuarinas all have different pods.

I believe the retail price for Northern Silky oak and Qld Maple is around $4000 per cubic metre in southern centres. The most I've ever paid for it in log form was $110 per cubic metre of log but there was a mobile sawmill in the same paddock and a front end loader to handle the logs. Sawmills up here pay $70 per cubic metre max if you have a paddock full of sawlogs. I won't pay anything for single logs as removing them is an expensive process (no economies of scale). I'll remove them for free which is a hell of a lot less than a tree lopper would charge.

What's a single log on the ground worth?
    Short answer: $0.00

like you said southern centres, it is qiute plentiful; where you are i know cos in grew up there,we are talkin bout a single lo9g here not a commercial quantity, opening acan of worms i reckon, its all about a niche market and it is there.short answer it is wat you make it.
