whats this tree worth?
In recent floods in northern NSW a tree washed down our creek, so we cut it up. I am told it is Australian Red Cedar and is worth a bit.
Can anyone confirm it is Australian Red cedar and maybe give me a general idea of what it is worth.
Attached are a couple of picture of it.
Thanks guys

you need to get an arborist or timber expert to advise you, I reckon. If you Google the species "toona australis" it may display images of the trees in their living state, which might help too. Value if it is a Red Cedar, is hard to determine as many have moth larvae in them which can cause a lot of damage. Ideally you'd sell it to a boutique timber merchant who has a kiln drying operation.

I am not trying to be smart but
1. to get it slabbed will cost you about $80 per hour then you need to stack and dry it for about 3-5 years before it can be used.
2. to get it milled will require getting it freighted to the mill etc. it also needs to be stacked and dryed.
I think you will find most people dont pay for trees such as this but often someone will take it for nothing to use themselves.
Sorry if this dissapoints you but the time and effort required does not make paying for trees commercially viable.
If you want to get rid of it try sending Weisyboy a PM he may be able to help.regards

That there tree
looks suspiciously like Toona Ciliata to me! That's the new handle for Toona Australis. Somebody couldn't help but fiddle with the nomenclature.
Great post Mick!!

gday
australian red cedar is worth a bit as long as you have someone to buy it.
in the past logs were felled and left lying at the loading ramps due to the fact that there is a limied market.
if you want to buy it it is worth a fortune but if you wat to sell it it ain worth anything (unless you have someone to buy it).
its a bit of a how long is a peice of string question.
i have 2 standing dead have been for 5 years that i am weighing for an excuse to fell. ad anothe 10 growing down the gully. one is a good 60ft tall and over 3ft accross at the but.
if ya want it slabed it can be done for around $50-$60/hour and red cedar cuts verry quickly. for Example a log 500mm dia by 2m long can be milled in about 45 mins including setup.
the slabs will need to be end sealed and stacked with stickers out of the sun for about a year if cut 2" thick.
hope this helps some

i cant believe what i,m reading here you are saying that red cedar is worthless, its as simple as supply and demand for a product, how much red cedar do you see around? not much anymore,i think 2pha if you slabbed the timber, you would definetely get your money back and some thats my opinion.
