Where can i get this?
Firstly i would like to say hello to all! im new to this forum, as i was introduced to it last week, and it seems very informative!
Im in year 12, dong my DTO major assesment assignment. And have been inspired by the arbortech website project plans.
My only problem is, i am having difficulty obtaining the timber. All the timber suppliers i have tried do not, and will not be able to get in radiata pine size's this large. I can get treated pine, but i have no need for it, and would be pointless spending the extra dollars for no gain.
My main question is, does any body know a supplier who will be able to get this for me? and roughly how much i will be looking at per metre? or a similiar timber, as i am not really that great with what is what.
Size wise i will be after at least 100x100, but would prefer it to be larger.
I am in melbourne (williamstown) but am prepared to travel great distances to get what i need.
Thank you, alex!

Try Shiver Me Timbers in Kororiot Creek Road as they supply all sorts of recycled timber that would look better than the pine.
You may have to amend the sizes to get the overall size you need.Jim Carroll

Two ideas...
1: You dont have to use 100mm wood, as it's a glued up lamination you could make it out of 50mm timber and just use twice as many pieces. That might be available off the shelf.
2: Contact someone with a portable sawmill that could cut the timber for you, you would need to dry it for a few months though, especially with those thicker boards.
Have a look at this thread http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=29689
That cypress would look 10 times better than pine but would carve about the same. Might be worth sending him a message, see if he can sort you out with some thick Mac boards that you could use.
Cheers

Perhaps closer to home before you start travelling, Check:
locall councils for recycling depots;
secondhand dealers; and
commercial recycling stores.
Your local Yellow Pages may help

Thank you for the help fellas!
Jim Carroll funny you mention shiver me timbers, i actually live on the same road as them, i just have not had the time to head out there.. and didnt think of them .
Ianab, i will be re-searching This timber a little, then i will probaly send him of a message, as it sounds rather appealing!
woodbe, I am actually heading to adelaide over the easter period! but doubt i will have enough car space to 'log' the stuff back to melbourne! Thanks any way!!

Try the local council as they some times fell trees or clean up and take them to the dump,so for a school they might well put you in the right direction...........

I love that plan. It's something I want to build - one day
Good luck with the project. We'd love to see photos of the work in progress and the finished result.
cheers

Sawtell,
nice job - big effort if you complete it make sure you post the fininshed item.
However - as a word of warning an ARBORTECH is one of the most dangerous items in a workshop. be very careful, ie:
enough space, no substance abuse, good grips, small cuts... dont rush etc...Zed

The timber thicknesses are not critical as its all glued together into one large block. The finished height and width are more important than the actual timber sizes you glue it up out of.
If you have to buy it, I'd settle for 90mm instead of 100mm
then just glue up 90 x 35 or 90 x 45 pine to get the final result.
but if you find 19mm etc timber very cheap just use that.
You could even glue it up out of old pallets etc which you might be able to scrounge for nix from factories etc.

I'd probably be looking for recycled oregon for that. A lot of old oregon is available that was used in pergolas and decking or even house frame timber. Often it is free.
