    Default Lignum Vitae Guaiacum spp.

Hi all. I have a log of Lignum Vitae, Guaiacum spp.around 300mm diameter by 1200 long. I want this timber to be used well by skilled crafts people and I am thinking of milling it up into blanks for turning and carving. Originally it was purchased in the 70s for carving a singular sculpture and I am loath to cut it up but feel it might be the most respectful thing to do if it means it gets used. Any thoughts on what sort of sizes people would find most useful? I am in Adelaide and grateful for any feedback.

That is unobtainium last time I saw LV of that size was when we machined new bearing for a sub back in the late 60s.
I wouldn’t be cutting it up.

Thanks H. I had this feeling too that it actually is too good to cut up. Maybe it is something to just marvel at. My grandmother originally purchased it to make a sculpture but could never bring herself to do it. Maybe it is destined to stay as a log. The family want to sell it so I do need to work out a value if anyone has any ideas?

Lignum Vitae was listed under CITES in 1975. You may need to provide proof of purchase prior to 1975 before you can sell it. I don't actually know how it's supposed to work. Just guessing.
I think because of it's impossibility to obtain it may be worth a lot of money.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Check out this site Lignum Vitae Availability - Lignum Vitae Water Lubricated Bearings (lignumvitaesolutions.com)

It would certainly pay to do some research on its worth before cutting. Look up some of the vendors of "rare" or "exotic" woods.
