White Oak
Hi,
i recently bought a batch of timber sold as "White Oak" (not American or English) from an Australian dealer.
The wood is dense, quite heavy, creamy with the occasional glimmer of pink in the grain which is quite straight. Looks like nice timber, but am curious as to what species it actually is. googling white oak came up with grevillea bailyana from Queensland. Not much else from Australia that i can find.

Thoughts?
Thanks
Cheers,

Difficult to make any ID with those images. Certainly does not have the prominent medullary structures so evident in Proteaceae's so perhaps not white oak - Grevillea baileyana.
My initial impression is that its "Tas Oak" - Eucalyptus regnans, Eucalyptus obliqua or Eucalyptus delegatensis - particularly with what appears to be a gum vein in the board, in lower middle of photo 2.Mobyturns

As said, the pics are too blurry to make out much but the wood doesn't seem to have the prominent medullary rays of a Quercus (the species American white oak belongs to), or a typical Grevillea, so I think you can rule both of those out. It does look more like one of those several species of Eucalyptus that go by the commercial name of "oak" to me, too....

Looks to me like the timber we had in our Melbourne kitchen years ago that was nominally called "Alpine Ash". (AKA Tas Oak, Vic Ash, .....)

Thanks - I do have some 'Tassie Oak' and its readily available here in WA and I did initially suspect that but this new batch looks a bit different (not quite as pink a tinge).
It also feels different; its somewhat rough to the touch both with and against the grain even its dressed state...i'll try to get some better pics later after work ...
Cheers guys

Draconus, "Tas. oak", "Vic. Ash" & whatever other trade names they're sold under can legally consist of at least 3 species (& some say several other species get dumped in there "unofficially"). Besides the variation within any given species (which can be quite large) there are slight differences between the species used, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's different from your last batch. And colour is one of the least reliable guides to species.....

Ha ! Fair call - I confess not at all being across identifying less common timber species from anything other than whats on the label Although I do know what Pine, Jarrah and Black Walnut look like
I do have some Victorian Ash that I bought from Austim here in Perth recently and compared to this last batch that is very white and fine grained. So like you suggested this 'White Oak' I just received from NSW may well indeed be Tassie Oak but it looks different to the Tassie Oak we normally get here in Perth - at least from Bunnings anyway.
Cheers guys.
