Thread: wilga

From Australian Timbers Vol Two:

"The timber is a very light honey colour, hard and fine-textured. Older trees contain an attractive black heart. The timber has a density of 895kg/cu.m."

i just went and got it only about half an hour ago
looks a lot like wilga to me but the guy said he didnt think it was wilga he said it was what he calls bumbly wood ( spell)
the timber is very hard, light yellow or honey coloured and has some spalting in it .
i brought back a small branch with some leaves attatched aswell just have to take a pic of them .
i got 4 reasonable size bits of wood from the tree but one bit has some rabbit netting inclusion as a bonus ( the chainsaw cut the netting no probs .
now i am going to google bumbly wood ?

took a few pics , looks like wilga to me , rod the farm owner rekons its not he is in his 50's and was born there ?????????
so he should know .
but cant find much on bumble tree other than wild orange and it aint wild orange i am sure.

The grain and central spalting looks typical of Wilga, but the bark looks wrong, not that I am any expert. Here is a log of Wilga (on the left) I just got from the Melany show, hope it helps.

Certainly looks like Wilga to me Texx - particularly with the flower buds coming on - you can see the flowers open on pics on this page on my website .. http://www.ttit.id.au/treepages/wilga.htm

yep we have some very large wilga trees down on the lucerne farm and the bees love those flowers and i was quite sure this is wilga, never realy looked at the bark on the ones down where i work ( even though i quite often part my cruiser under one of them ) just that this other guy threw me when he said he this one from his place was'nt a wilga
i will be checking out the bark on the known wilga trees where i work next time i am down there
