Default Are you good with wood?

Here is a piece (one of many) of a species of timber that I have had sitting in my old Shed back in Sydney. I cut it down and into various sized pieces over 30 years ago...... and there they have stayed in the shed safe from the elements. During this time I have only ever turned one piece and found it to be a wonderful 'subject timber' for turning.
To this point, I have recently offered a piece (pics to follow) to Richard Raffan who will be taking it from me at the Canberra Show and turning it at his leisure. As for the identity of this wood, that will be kept a secret unless someone identifies it beforehand.
So, until then I will leave it here on our Forum and see if anyone can identify it based on these pics. It is approx.160mm long and 60 mm diameter and I have also removed the bark.
I now leave it to one and all to have a go. It shouldn't be too hard, at least the wood isn't, but I have never heard or read of anyone turning this type of wood before.

    Good luck,
    Bob

    Default Tree ID.

    Hi Bob,
Well it looks like Poplar to me.
Pity there was not a bit of bark, as it may have made it a bit easier to ID.
That piece you have there, is it reasonably light in weight.

It;s not "balsa" light, but then it's not hardwood heavy either.
Oh yeah, it ain't poplar either. The bark was thin and light.

Paulownia is over twice the weight of Balsa. (288 to 128 kg per cubic metre) The bark is thin and greyish in colour but it has a very prominent hollow up the core of the tree like a piece of bamboo. On this basis I'd say it is not Paulownia,

At first I thought it might be Dogwood but there is no bark.

    Cheers
