wood for carving QLD
Hi new to forum,
Want to start power carving.
Where on earth do you find wood for this?
I would like to start with something soft.
I am in Ipswich near Brisbane,
Any help from you regulars would be well received.
Thanks in advance.
Nick

i'm also in ipswich. You'll find timber suppliers in brisbane. Lazarides at banyo is good for range. If you want soft i'd suggest silky oak though it may be too soft. Jacaranda is another possibility but i'm not sure if that may also be too soft. Both should be readily available in the area. I keep seeing the work they're doing on the motorway and keep hoping for a chance to grab one of the fallen trees along the way but haven't had much luck. Pity they'll end up woodchipped.

Thx for your reply,
Yes some Jacaranda would be sweet.
I'll try your suggestions and see how I go.
Thanks again.

Yes camphor would be sweet,
I like the smell of it as well.
Must get friends with a tree lopper.

My suggestion is definately camphor laurel. Great smell, beautiful grain and colour, not too soft, but soft.
Good luck!

Give Cedar Sales a ring - they're in Ipswich.
Ask for some Alaskan Yellow Cedar - carves like butter.
Also non-splintering
My favourite white species.
