One weekend we should have a roadside chalenge.

two blokes, 1 trailer, 1 chainsaw, 5 km radius of the workshop, 3 metres from the edge of the bitumen..... no cheating

    cheers

hey i like that idea soundman, we accept yr challenge, might be good idea to have a third party take the pics as proof. besides mate, nayone hwo takes us on up here would probably lose, we r talking rose sheok, old growth bluegum, bloodwood, rosewood, silky oak, bunya, blackbean, burls, whose up to the challenge ?

Th eonly chnage i owuld like to suggest is the wood be fallen or dead timber and that it be anywhere within 5 km's not just roadsides. It can be on property or in the forest, long as its free for the taking.

    cheeeeeers

Today I cut up a few trees that the council dropped last week. First one was in my neighbour's driveway (less than 20m from my house) a large red stringy, about 3m3. The second was a bloodwood diagonally across the road, only about 1m3 (it was the top out of a tree, had a lot of dead wood hanging off it and it was right above the bus stop ie a widow maker  ) Don't know how I'd go in the challenge as it's all beyond the scope of trailer pick up, I'm waiting on an earthmoving contractor to shift it for me. It will be cut into joists for the deck which I'll build off the back verandah one of these days.

Default Last load for the season...

Picked up this lot on the weekend. I've been wanting to try the Leopardwood for ages and never thought I'd find one this big to play with. 12" at the butt and dead straight for 10 feet (rarely see it over 6" diameter). It's supposed to be one of the best timbers known to turn, but seeing I'll probably never get one this big and straight again, I ran the 6' log into boards too see how it goes.
The Leichardt bean was what I went out for but only ended up getting a little one just to try it out. Some interesting colour in it from some rot that was spreading down the heart as you can see in the boards. If it's any good there is some good big stuff there that's already on the deck.
The little bits of Sandal wood were disappointing - hardly any heartwood. The Lancewood - little bit's at a time cos' it just splits like mad on ya!
Too hot now for any more so I'm stickin' to the shed for the summer. I've run out of room to store anymore anyway - that's about the 10th ute load this season.

Note: All from private property under owners supervision..........(this time!)

    I forgot....
    No cranes
    No winches
    Definitely NO earth moving equipment.

.... Unless you crank it by hand.

A rope of the tow ball is fair game........ unless the tow ball is connected to a Unimog.... thats just not fair

sorry Mick If you didn't get it home by the sweat of you own brow it don't count.

We gota give the Garden shed brigade a fair go.

    cheers

Nothing flash about it. Basically a copy of Stu's rig from Tokyo. Very detailed step by step on how he made his and used it on these links (looks a lot tidier than mine too! )

    http://ablett.jp/workshop/csm.htm

I set mine up to be used on 2 different saws which made it a bit clumsy and heavier but 'one day' I'll redo it just for the old Stihl-08. I've got a proper ripping chain (skip-tooth) on it now which does a better job but the oiler doesn't work properly on it's side so I have to keep an oil-can handy - might mount it on the mill 'one day'. Note that the 'redback' channel in my pic was the only straight thing on hand for a guide at the time - a bit too flexible but the 'ladder' we normally use was at a mates place.
