Default A wood id quiz, just for fun

OK, so I'm always carping that identifying wood from pics is a very dodgy business, & just for fun, I'm putting up these two pics to see if anyone out there can id it. I will be pretty surprised if anyone does, but who knows, there are some clever folk out there in Cyberland...

The first pic is of the bark & cut surface: 1 Bark & cut surface.jpg

And this is an end grain shot (not as clean as it ought to be (but you can see it well enough, I think): 2 End grain.jpg

I've got a couple more pics, that I will drip-feed you. One would give the game away, to a botanist, & at least one of those looks in here on occasion, so you're not getting either of these until I get a few suggestions.

    Fire away!
    Cheers,
    IW

    Nope, definitely not a Banksia.

Keep 'em coming, though, all suggestions respectfully received!

Alright, alright, I was going to say something but I chickened out (coz I suspect that my guess is too obvious).

Be it an Acacia? Maybe a Casuarina or Allocasuarina, but no way can I go more specific than that......

    Default The Timber.

    Hi Ian,
To me, the Bark suggests that it might be Liquid Amber, BUT, the Wood I think, maybe a Wattle of some kind.
It looks like there is a Grub hole at the end, but a bit hard to tell.
    Regards,
    issatree.

    Default Enough teasing (almost)

OK, some of your guesses are perfectly reasonable (but still incorrect.. ). Those saying 'a wattle' are at least in the family.

Here is a pic of the leaves: 3 Leaves.jpg

C'mon, just a few more suggestions, I'm on a little mission, here. I'll give you one more chance, then I'll spill the beans.....

I would have said Grace Eucalypt as the bark, striping and cross were bang on, but the leaves are wrong. I saw a few in Sydney and my guess would be, seeing the leaves, Jacaranda or a species of "curry tree".

Nope, I said it's nota wattle. It's in the same family (Fabaceae, or legume family) but 'tisn't a wattle.

    None of the above....

Alright, here's the only pictorial information that can really help : 4 Flowers & seeds.jpg

I'll tell you what it is after dinner, if no-one gets it now......

sally wattle ? (melinoxon ?) The half cut log has the same look. A lot of red centre with small amount of white near the bark.

I like this game Ian. Hope it becomes common here…… maybe there could be prizes involved down the track..
