Wood Identification
With the number of threads started with members wanting wood ID I thought I'd put together an identification tool made from my wood collection. It only shows one hundred or so species, and that's a good start, but what can you lot do to extend it?

This is my first website, and it looks it too, but its functional, and the downloads are free, so take a peek.

You're looking at two years work there. Getting quality images was the hardest part because I had to use natural sunlight for many of them, and here on the Sunshine Coast that has been in short supply for quite a while. Then again there was file size, and all the other boring details, like learning how to create a website. Its been a long learning curve.

So there are other members who have wood samples sitting in a box and gathering dust are there? Perhaps you could help expand this library one way or another.
This project was never meant to be mine alone. I had pictured an open-source tool made by forum members - for their shared use.
You could come up with a totally separate effort like Vern did on his website http://web.aanet.net.au/ttit/, or else you could send me prepared samples (gift or loan), with text, that I could make up into more files. You would get full credit for what you submit, and take full responsibility for its accuracy too.
Official or trade samples are more credible, but can be limiting. What ever is displayed needs to be representative of the species, and gathering the text for each sample can be an adventure too.
I have been rather careful to exclude those samples in my collection I wasn't totally certain of, with supporting evidence.
It won't matter if we end up with duplicates, things will sort themselves out.
Anyone interested in helping in some way can give me a PM on their thoughts, and perhaps we can make further posts about the project in the future.

Well done
There are quire a few timber ID sites, but the more Ausy ones the better especially with photos, provided the information is correct. I've certainly added your site to my favourites.
Perhaps at our next forum BBQ in SEQ we could all bring samples to add to your collection.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Authentication
Authentication for wood identification is a thorny subject, its something based on scientific reputation. This is why I kept mostly to official samples released by the Queensland Forestry Department and its Tasmanian equivalent. I suggest peer review as our best tool for keeping up the quality of anything released to this forum. If everything has to be approved by someone in some sort of external authority the combined project will stop right here.
Experts have their own agender, they have written books and wish to sell them, and here I have released to this forum an idea that could undermine their efforts and security one day.
If you had a $400.00 book to sell showing your professional wood ID work, would you wish to help this project? Of course not.
Hey, we are on our own and have to stand on our own feet. Room needs to be made to criticise our own efforts, with a series of editions released if necessary. We work to our own satisfaction for our own use.
There are a number of members among us who know their woods and could possibly be involved in the peer review.
Have a think about it,
Peter

We usually take turns, Gold Coast - Brisbane - Sunshine Coast - Toowoomba. The last ones were in the Gold Coast and Toowoomba. Always looking for new members to offer. Often for shed christenings, business openings, swap meets, demos etc. Each time is different, but we always have a good time. My last one was a demo of timber milling, wood turning and Domino use - all done by others, I was just the cook
