wood slices?
At the Sydney wood show I got a couple of 'slices' of american basswood from a lady demoing pyrography. I got them for the purpose of doing scrollwork on and let SWMBO do some of her pyro work on some. I've done a cockatoo on one and about to do a leopard on another.
Put some white shellac on the pyro work and have to put the wax on next, see how that brings it up.
Anyway what I was after is, what is the correct woody term for the cut of wood I got. Its like they got the whole tree and just cut it up into a bunch of 3/4" slices, at a slight angle so it gives the wood an oval look. The lady is in Victoria somewhere, but was looking around locally to see if someone supplies them around the Sydney area. Would help if I knew the correct term for the cut so I can try not too look like too much of an idiotBrett

Brett - Slices sounds good. They are usually available at places that sell pyrography and woodcarving supplies. Think you will find they are imported precut from the USA.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers - Neil
PS I'll bet that there are some available at the Newcastle Expo next month.

White Shellac
Yeah they did come precut from America, wasnt necessarily after the basswood, just some nice slices of timber or burls.
I should be at the Newcastle show, have been the last two years. Will keep my eye out there for some timber. Will have to look up the dates that its on.
Are you going to make the trip this year?
.ps.
got some white shellac from stoppers at the show, put it on the basswood and two spots it showed a little patchy. SWMBO tipped it directly onto wood and then brushed it on a little at a time, do you think thats what did it or is it most likely the wood?
its mostly smooth but a few patches are rough, will give it a light going over with some abrasive paper to see if it fixes it. Then will try the wax over that and buff it with one of your mops.Brett

We'll be there.
The patchiness probably come from the fact that you are applying the stuff to endgrain and unless you apply it evenly it will soak in leaving a darker mark in some section of the wood because it has sucked the polish deeper into the grain in that section. SWMBO did it wrong!!
You should also have finely sanded the piece before applying anything. Shellac is not a repair kit for badly prepared work. It is a fine finish that needs to go over a well prepared base as do most finishes.
Cheers - Neil
You will only get out of a finish what you put in. If you don't prepare well you will only ever get an ordinary finish.
