Cleaning up and preserving hardwood that has rot
I'm cleaning up a hardwood joist that is in my deck that had some rot started in it along one side. This was because someone earlier had nailed a plank to the side of the joist creating a nice pocket for debris and moisture to build up.
The plank has been removed (there was no need for it to be there in the first place), and I've used a wired brush to remove the soft and punky wood. The joist is still in pretty good shape overall at this stage, and I'm thinking if properly treated and filled and painted there is no reason for the rot to continue, since the moisture trap has been removed.
I was thinking of applying a soluable copper based preservative before filling with "builders bog" (styrene filler), and then painting with an exterior weatherproof paint.
The local Mitre 10 hardware is selling a copper/chromium/boron mix for timber preservation, but very expensive for what you are getting really. I was thinking of just buying some copper sulphate, mixing up a solution in some water and applying that as a fungicide. Let it dry, apply the filler, paint.
Normally I would just replace the joist, but this one's a bit tricky, and risky, to remove, and I'd prefer to save it if it can be saved.
Thoughts?

Wrong sub-forum for this kind of question perhaps? If so, which one(s) would be more appropriate?
