    Default WTB:timber for guitar brisbane

    Hi all,

I don't know where to put this, here, in musical instruments or buy/sell/swap.

I'd like to buy some wood to build a solid body electric guitar, preferably from a supplier in south east queensland. I know about some of the online luthier suppliers, but I figure there must be a yard somewhere in brissy or close who have tassy blackwood qld maple etc in suitable size lumps.

I may be showing my ignorance but I've not gone shopping for "exotic" stuff like this so ahve no clue where to start.

    Any tips appreciated.

What do want to use? I got some rough sawn Maple and Walnut planks from Lasarides which I then had to resaw and dress. At the time it wasn't too expensive. I went in on a Saturday and they pulled the packs down and let me go through them to pick out exactly which planks I wanted. Not sure if they would still do that. I took them to "Wood 'n You" at Coopers Plains to use his jointer and thincknesser to dress it. Also used his bandsaw to cut out the body and neck blanks. Moxons is also another source of exotic timbers.

The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

    Damian,

I agree with Peter - I have used Lazarides Timber a couple of times and have always found them to be very helpful. They are worth the visit.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

Blackwood would be my first choice, but then again I have no idea of prices.

I'm thinking of a 3 piece blackwood layup for the neck maybe with jarrah or something veneers in each joint, so a 5 piece neck, with blackwood wings.

I believe blackwood is supposed to be similar to koa and qld walnut more or less similar to mahogany ?

I'm afraid I'm not as up on local timbers as I am with the exotics.

Machining it afterwards won't be a problem. I can sort that.

Thank you very much for replying.

    Hi Damian,
I have a reasonable amount of blackwood that would be suitable. Give me a yell on 0400 455 705 or 3274 6897.
    Cheers,
    Craig
