    Default Sandalwood vs false sandalwood

    Hi everyone,

By the timber alone, is it possible to tell the difference? I've this week turned two different pieces, one labeled sandalwood and the other false sandalwood.

They are certainly very similar but the smell of the one labeled just sandalwood was a little less sweet than the false. It is also a bit more orange/ brown coloured, whereas the false sandalwood was more a camel colour.

Is it likely they are both false sandalwood and these variations are typical of the species, or is it likely that I have some genuine sandalwood?

Please note they are both Australian timbers in this case. I would be very surprised if I'd somehow gotten real Indian sandalwood.

Checkout these two links to my website...
    Sandalwood
    False Sandalwood
There really no confusing the two - they both smell delicious but quite different and the timbers look nothing alike. The False Sandalwood will emit its fragrance for years while the Sandalwood will stop as soon as you put a finish on it. False sandalwood was used for the base of incense for many years so it smells a lot like incense. Sandalwood is a sweeter more perfume like fragrance.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you ttit. I'll try and get some photos of the pens I turned up on here so the difference can be seen. I think they are a bit different to each other but the "sandalwood" had a much stronger, though not necessarily sweeter smell.
