Default Addition to the review of the superjaws

While I still maintain that the superjaws is a brilliant piece of kit as per my other review some time back... there is ONE complaint

This is the superjaws log vice grip attachment

It is firstly to thin a grade of metal to do any serious holding of the timber

Second it is so flimsy the teeth bend OUTWARDS within a short period of time and use

Mine have bent out and Ive belted them back straight theyve bent out again and again Ive belted them straight... each successive bending and belting is weakening the steel that has been used.

The superjaws in my opinion (for what its worth) is a great thing to have and having 2 is just perfect... the base unit is brilliant solid and the locking mechanism works a treat is easy fast and holds like buggary... it packs away easily and you can hurl... errr lift and put it in the back of the ute to take to jobs with no problems

The engineers vice attachment is also a great peice of additional kit... well worth the extra $$ to buy... good solid metal is used its slotted on the sides for round metals and holds whatever metals thrown... err put in them with ease and grip like you wouldnt believe.

The ONLY issues I have found with the superjaws is the log vice attachment... it is pathetic week thin and not up to any form of standard to hold any "log"... yes it will happily hold a "log" of around 1" diameter easily no problems even a 1 1/2in "log" but go any larger and the damned thing bends!! And that means NO GRIP ON THE LOG!!... which if your chainsawing the log you will have a problem that could cause injury or worse

The largest diameter log I put in mine was around 6in and the teeth bent outwards... this is INADEQUATE for holding a log of that diameter when chainsawing in my view... others may of course differ as is their choice but me I expect and need the jaws to HOLD the timber!! not hold for a few ticks then when the chainsaw bites let the log move downward!! THIS IS NOT SAFE in my book

So if your getting the superjaws and the log vice heed the warning... it will NOT hold a log for very long it will not hold its shape for very long... you will NEED to reinforce the teeth and back plate with some heavier grade steel... better yet use them as a template to make some out of 1/4in steel then toss them into the bin!

Triton should recall the jaws and re manufacture them in a higher grade thicker steel this would Id have thought come somewhere under the heading of duty of care of the manufacturer surely? But maybe not someone with more insight into the duty of care legislation may be able to enlighten us with that regard

    Anyway there you go
    Cheers
    Shane

I would go get some happy snaps to show what I mean but its phissin down again... so... wait awhile eh!!

Might be an idea to post some measurements of the thickness of the jaws - maybe there's an "old" version, and a "new" version of them.

I haven't done heaps and heaps of log-holding with mine, but I've certainly done some. I was being ultra-careful, as this was when I was gingerly learning to chainsaw, so I made sure I jumped on the SuperJaws pedal hard as I could so's the wood wouldn't be going anywhere. Pretty sure my log jaws haven't deformed.

I've now got 2 self-imposed shed obligations for tonight:
    1) check flatness of BP16A table
    2) check for deformity of SuperJaws log jaws.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Seconded.

Maybe they changed 'em when they redesigned the SuperJaws?

Pity if they did. Improve one thing at the expense of something else.

I have them too & haven't bent mine, despite all shapes & sizes having been clamped in them.

    Default Triton no longer cares

    Hi guys,
My two bob's worth is that the Triton mob is well past the point where they really genuinely care about real product development.

At one time I was the proud owner of nearly every tool that Triton made and used them to renovate my older style house.
Now ,I wouldn't care to own any tool they currently make.
The old Triton designs used to be truly unique tools and many were must haves for me to own.

With some of the ho hum crap being offered now, some of their
(tools ?) would not make it through a single project.

OK, just checked - my log and pole jaws are made from material 2.5mm thick.

Okay having braved the wild and whooley weather having taken on the rivers of water flowin from above having transgressed across the teeming thriving mess of gear inside the shed... having then had to sort not 1 not 2 but 3 packed boxes of assorted crud gear tools and gawd alone knows what... I finally found the majikal measuring stick

And here I gives yer 2 pics to show how thick it is... I really have little understanding of this majikal measuring stick I just work on the theory that if ALL the peices of timber I thickness hit the sides of the thing theyre close enough!

Anyway thank you Shane for going to so much trouble and effort getting sopping wet and fighting bravely into the dark cave out the back... your a bloody legend mate

Yeah yeah no wukkers all in the name of furtherance of knowledge eh?

hehehe slipped through without the pics didnt it? no wukkers all fixed again

HEY!!! I just thought of somfunk!! Maybe its me?? Maybe Im too tuff for the things I mean when I stomp down on the foot lever with me BUNG leg its just too much for the thing... the power I mean... could be? nah not likely cause Id say a fair few of yous mob would have stronger legs than mine and if yours arent bending then what gives on mine? As I said the thickest peice Ive put into it was 6in diameter... thats it!! Just some 4 - 6in diameter logs of Jarrah for firewood... and I KNOW my leg is bung and has little strength in it at present which was what turned me on about the things... that with a simple stand down on the lever I could lock the timber in place worked a treat too... just bent the damned teeth out... ah well back to the gympie hammer being a part of the kit I guess

One question Ding... you broken yer new you-beaut welder already?

If not, why not just beef up the jaws a bit? A U-shaped bit of strapping over each end should stop 'em from flaring. And even if it doesn't, you should be able to make yer own set of heavier replacement jaws. Much better than effing around with shipping and waiting on a service dept to get back to you.

    Default Triton superjaws

I have just come across a set of insert cast engineers jaws for the Triton Superjaws. It was made for the original Superjaws. I purchased them years ago but tucked them away and forgot about them.
Normally I would offer a photo but the uploading system and a camera mis function prevent this.

My set of Superjaws was purchased very soon after they appeared on the market. The fact that Triton then was willing to put the design and quality effort into their product attributed in a big way to the longevity and hard life my Superjaws has endured.

It has been a vise, a clamp, a saw horse, and a welders table and still works in the way it was designed.Never once has it failed me.It has been used and abused.

That was the basis of my thoughts that contributed for the above post within this thread. If a product does not meet standards, anyone can offer an opinion.

To see a modified Superjaws product trading upon the past good name irks me somewhat. The real Triton of old would have a product rep pick up on these thread comments and now would be replying here, looking at some way of upgrading and improving the product.

The current mob (apparently ) will only upgrade to make it cheaper to produce as is evidenced by the current superjaw lack of performance. They obviously have not learn't the lessons that George did and respond positively to the product owners feedback.

Another contributor has seen fit to post a negative reputation point because I have said this. But hey! I am a big boy now and can live with that. I understand that many may not necessarily agree with what I believe or say !

What this man did not do was leave a comment about his thoughts as to why I might be be wrong. Nor has he posted a reply on comment in this thread.

Calming down now and stepping off the soapbox.
