Is it stiff or not actually raising ?

Does it raise and lower as expected via the micro adjust ?

    Dear Phoenix,

Maybe it says you are supposed to take the plunge springs out for table use. Otherwise you are fighting both the weight of the thing, plus the springs... I know that with my R1200 I had to take the springs out so that whenever I lifted it up from underneath, it would stop lifting up the little portable router table that I had it mounted in - and that's just the spring compression! You'd be up against both that, and the weight of the thing, when trying to wind the unit up through the table from above.

Have a good read through the instructions and look out for some mention of the springs during table use...

    Good Luck,
    Batpig.

I second Batpig - the plunge spring is meant to be removed for table mounted work - if it isn't, it will be much harder to raise the router.

There's a video of how to remove and replace the spring on Stu's Shed TV

    Default Router

I third that, remove the spring bloke and you wont have any problems, router moves up and down easily by hand when adjusting.

In which case, you have a damaged worm gear which must be replaced. Although I hear that a metal worm gear is now being used, the vast majority of MOF001s out there will be fitted with a hard white plastic worm, as found on the bigger router, the TRA001.

In my view, the replacement of the plastic worm with a metal one is not necessarily a good idea, as gearing for this purpose often needs a "shear point" - exactly what the plastic worm provides.

Removing the springs is essential when used inverted, to prevent exactly the stresses on the worm that has now damaged it. You can still use the router, by winding above the height that you require, then winding back down with the fine adjuster until the height is reached.

I put up a page a while back that showed the worm replacement on the TRA001, although I've not needed to replace one on the MOF001 - a slightly different job I suspect, due to the T-piece for the above-the-table winder handle. Anyhow, the dismantling page for the TRA001 is here if it helps.

thanks for that - it makes the job of replacing the worm gear look pretty acheivable - i guess that the 1400 will be quite similar in many respects - wonder if anyone here has pulled one down....

Just re read the instruction book (all 10 pages of it) for the fourth time and it seems you have to engage the winder handle clutch ring in, and adjust at the same time ,I'l try that out and see what happens ,I doubt if anything is worn haven't used it that much 3-4 hours max.

I'm confused now. The MOF001 has a push-button clutch engagement, the TRA001 has the clutch ring - are you reading the correct instructions? In any event, the fine adjuster will not work at all unless the clutch is engaged - if it isn't, you're in the plunge mode.

The amount of use, unfortunately, has nothing to do with whether the worm is damaged. One forced wind of the adjuster is enough to take off the lands off the plastic gear. As I've said before, it's a shear point.

Thanks Ray I will pull it apart on the weekend and see if I can see what is wrong ,pain in the butt though, very frustating trying to creep up on a height adjustment, without the handle adjustment, the micro adjuster does not seem to make any difference.

    Does that mean that:

    1) You couldn't get it apart

    2) You got it apart to some degree, but not enough

    3) You got it apart, but found nothing wrong?

(This sort of feedback helps those trying to help others in the future)
