Default Some advice/comments for a Triton newbie

    Hiya all.

I have 2 questions i'd like to ask.

Recently, after resisting the temptation not to but a cheap router, i finally slashed out and bought a Triton router/table and stand.

When I unpacked the router I noticed that it appears there is a hairline crack around 1 of the screw holes in the cast body. 3 of the screw housings are perfect and one is not. I hope this makes sense. The screws I'm talking about are the ones that hold the cast body into the orange top. There is one on each side of the router.

I was pretty disappointed when i saw this and took a few pic's and sent an email to Triton. I got a speedy reply and the advice was (although the pic's were hard to see the fault) that I should not accept anything that is less than "perfect", therefore take it back and get Bunnies to swap it over.

After showing/explaining to staff at Bunnies, my router was swapped for another one on the shelf. Low and behold, it was exactly the same.

I was told there is no real pressure on the screw housing and therefore it should be right and if anything went wrong, it would be covered under warranty.

If other uses understand the screw holes that I'm talking about, what has been the condition of yours. Are they all perfect.

To describe the fault, it looks as though around the screw hole has been touched up with a gringer ..or something and there may have been some attempt to weld it.

Triton assured me that would not have been the case and it sounds like the router was taken out of the mould to quick.

Should I wait and get another new router ex the factory??

My second question, and it may seem like a silly one. When I finally get a router, would I be able to attach a 2 inch sanding drum and use it on the table to sand/shape things at a lower speed.. Is this possible??

I should also point out that Triton have been very professional in their customer service in trying to resolve this issue. For any person ...like I was a month ago, that may be reading this board and trying to decide if to spend the router... I think I have made the right decision...and I hope it is worth the wait to get the problem sorted.

(you should here the grief i'm copping from the wife..."I told u so") but i still hope to show her and I'm still telling her that I NEED the jigsaw attachment, as I don't have the table saw.....Yet.

Oh, and on the Jigsaw attchment.. Are they any good. For Fathers day I got a new jigsaw that has orbital action and a 100mm cut. I had to direct the Wife to get one that I think will be suitable for the router table.

I'm hoping to get it soon, i just need to get over the shock that I finally bought myself some Triton gear.

    Appreciate any comments.

    Thanks...Lyndsay

    Lyndsay,

I haven't noticed anything like you describe with my Triton router.

I would take Triton's advice though, and return it for another router if you are not happy.

I don't think that you can do the sanding drum thing. They are designed to be used in drill presses at around 500 to 1000 rpm.
I think the slowest my router goes is 12000 rpm (I could be wrong on the actual number but it's around that).

I don't own the jigsaw attachment so can't comment on that.

Hope this is of some help.

    Craig

Return the router it should be perfect.

DO NOT use a drum sander in the router.
    This would be very dangerous

Second all the above comments- get a perfect orange router- they are awesome, but you want a perfect one.

Re the jigsaw table- you can't use an orbital action jigsaw in it. That aside, and I can hear the disappointment from here, after having the jigsaw table for a while, and using it that is, my recommendation is to not go the table, but truck down to your local, and pick up the GMC scroll saw (for $55).

I now have both, and I haven't gotten close to using the jigsaw table again- the scroll saw is always ready to go (being a stand alone machine), and can do a better curve. Yes, the blade is a lot thinner, but then, it is fully supported top & bottom, so does not have as much tendency to flex in the direction of pressure.

Keep the jigsaw for handheld use- they are most useful that way anyway

    Default You wouldn't believe it/

Thanks Craig, Sprog and Stuart for your replies.

I am in the middle of making up a portable stand for my bench top drill press. I'll gain more bench space and I'll look at trying a drum sander and see how it goes.

As for the Router, I have just picked up the replacement, which I should say came from the triton Agent in Perth (Hills Industries). Literally risked a speeding ticket to get home and open it up....only to find that it is nearly the same.

There is still a destinct flaw around the same screw hole, although it does not appear as though this one has a hair line crack. Then when I see the overall finish of this one compared to the other 2 (which apart from the fault were perfect), I'm even more disappointed. Several chips/scrapes in the silver paint all over the body and it was fully sealed in the box.

I was going to get hold of a better digital camera, but I think I'll speak directly to Triton and ask another one be inspected ex the factory and if perfect, then have it sent to me. Given that I look after my tools and have waited so long to finally make a Triton purchase, I hope there will be some light at the end of the tunnell.

That is unless my expectations are way to high, but from your replies...maybe not.

I'll see how I go as I'm getting very "toewee" to make some dust, where at the moment all I'm making is steam outta me ears.

Fingers crossed.....or the Bosch 1300ace is looking very nice...

Hey Lynds, Hills Industries are not simplyTriton Agents in WA, Hills Industries (a public company) ARE Triton, they OWN 'em - you are already dealing with the 'horses mouth' so to speak, so tell 'em to fix it.

Too right Brian. Lynds, mine is spot on. Sounds to me like a batch problem. Ring Gordon Heggie or David Watkins at Triton. They're both a great guys and should see yo right.

    Default Almost There...

Well after a long wait, my replacement router came in and after checking it...it is the same.

It appears after speaking to Triton (and as mentioned by Tassie Rob), there is a fault with the mould and all Router's from batch 0327, will have the flaw. Triton have reassured me that it will not cause any problems to the router long term..

It came in last Wednesday and it happened to be the same night Triton held a 3 hour workshop in Esperance....1st I know of.. There was a great turn out and Tony the presenter was very clear and easy to understand....good night...

Anyhow, he viewed the router flaw and with his blessing, he said to use it and he will get me a flawless one, although it may take a month or so..

Well, with that in mine and after nearly 9 1/2 weeks since I bought my 1st Triton table (router 1st....damn....wish I could have afforded the saw table 1st..) I am madly assemblying the table..

I must say...although i haven't used it yet...I am very happy with the after sales service. (although the lastest router took a while to come ex East not from Hills.)

    Thanks all from your replies..
