    Good one crowie, thank you.

Further to my own experience, Last weekend I used the drill for the first time since charging the batteries in early August. Did everything I needed to, without seeming to lose any power at all. They didn't have that sort of shelf life when new, with the OEM batteries.

If I had known that the charger could handle NiMh, then I would likely have put them in. However, I am really happy with the results I got, but will do NiMh next repack...maybe a couple of years down the track.

    Crowie.

That is good news. My drill was not a Triton so no good for me but the price quoted is very good.

My drill is a 12v makita, so Crowie's offer is no good for me, but I've been reading all the posts about repacking, and think I must be missing something.

If I go the ni-Cd path, a set of 10 batteries from Jaycar will be $55. Plus then i need to figure out how to open the makita pack (there are no screws), then all the labour...
Or I can go to ebay and get a new battery pack for $58 (ignoring postage).

Is it really worth the hassle if you are just replacing nicad with nicad (assuming the quality of the packs on ebay are not rubbish)? Is repacking only worth it if upgrading to Ni-MH?

How can I tell if my makita charger will work with Ni-MH?

    John,

I too have a 12V Makita and the charger will do both NiCd and NiMh.

What is the model no. of your charger?

Are you're batteries the red P type Makita batteries (I think 1220/1222). If they are then you have got virtually no hope of getting it apart short of destroying it.

I got replacement batteries (NiMh) from this site

MAKITA 1233 Power Tool Battery, Replacement Power Tool Battery For MAKITA 1233 With 35% Off!

MAKITA 1222 Power Tool Battery, Replacement Power Tool Battery For MAKITA 1222 With 35% Off!

    G'Day John,
If I may suggest that you could send Hanson an email asking that question about your Makita as I did asking about my Triton; he was very helpful.
He also has a online store that may be worth a look.

COOLCAR SPARE PARTS items - Get great deals on items on eBay Stores!

I not sure if that helps, "pm" me if you want Hanson's mobile phone number to talk direct to him.
    Cheers, crowie

    Thanks for the links guys.
Yes, my batteries are the sealed red units (1220, 1.3Ah). Charger is the DC1470. It doesn't say anything on the charger, but the coolcar store says the original charger can be used for Ni-MH (whatever that's worth). This charger is prettty old (just a single light).

    Amazing how the prices vary.
At 1buy, a single 2Ah Ni-Cd batt is $71, and the 3Ah Ni-MH is $94! (For 2 batteries you may as well buy a new makita!)
    At coolcar, a 3Ah Ni-MH 2 pack is $95.
The site I was looking at was somewhere in between.

    John,

I think we have the same charger. I'll look tonite and let you know. Mine can be used for both Nicd and NiMh. I think it say that in the manual....(whether I can find it is another thing).

Prices do vary a lot. Just got to keep looking for the best price.

My drill is the 6227D, and I just downloaded the (US) manual, and it doesn't say anything about battery types. I don't know if I have my original Aus manual either. This drill must be 10-12yo, and is a bit of a favourite. I blew the motor once and replaced it for $50. That the orig batteries lasted 10y is not bad I guess.

I realise this has gone off topic from the original Triton repacking topic. To bring it back, I guess the lessons are:
    - unless the battery pack has disassembly screws, repacking is a problem.
    - even if you can repack, it may actually be cheaper to buy a replacement battery from ebay rather than individual replacement cells from Jaycar.
    - you might be able to upgrade from Ni-cd to Ni-MH using the same charger.

    G'Day John,
Is this the manual you've been looking for your drill?

    Also John,
    You might like to give the bloke at Coolcars an email;
he was very helpful to me and I'm extremely pleased with the price & service on repacking my triton batteries.
    cheers, Crowie

    John,

    My charger is a DC1414T, 7.2V to 14.4V NiCd / NiMh.

I have two of them. Send me a PM if you want to do a deal.
