bit release part II
OK so today I relased the colled nut till it was completely undone and had to pry the bit out. I took a look at the 1/4" collet and the inseert is firmly attached within the nut. The 1/2" has the nut separate from the insert. This seems counter to any router I have had. Should it be snapped into the collet nut? Just seems odd to me that they would user different collets like that. It appears to have a sort of recessed slot around the top that seems to suggest a snap fit. I looked at the rest of the suggestions and I would say that there is no roughness or scoring that would be a problem and I don't think the go no go tolerances would cause the bit to wedge that tightly.

Here are pictures of the two collets, top and bottom:
They are interchangeable onto the router shaft and when removed should look exactly like the above two do. Once the bit has released (after an extra turn, as already described in the previous thread), you should be able to unscrew either collet easily by hand. HTH

exactly. As I thought about the differences I realized the collet insert must have to snap into the collet nut. I put them together and threaded them onto the router and tightened with the wrench till the snapped together. Voila! as they say. Thanks to all on this forum who take the time to answer questions that may at times seem to them to be silly. For those of us that run into problems the help is appreciated.
