Default Anything new/interesting at the Brisbane '08 Triton stand?

    Dear Gents,

Has anyone attended this year's Brisbane Woodworking Show yet, and had a good look at the Triton stand to see if there's anything new or particularly interesting on display?

Maybe you talked to one of the reps and got some good insider "Lowdown"?

Or maybe you just noted down some of the prices that they had on the gear...

Was GMC anywhere to be seen? They don't show up on the floorplan...

    Thanks in advance,
    Batpig.

The Triton stand was just like a sales shed - ie just an area full of cardboard boxes of Triton gear for sale and staffed by people in Mitre 10 shirts.

No demos or anything like that. They had 2006 catalogs available. I was pretty disappointed by it really and did not hang around long there.

I am not au fait in Triton prices but what I saw did not attract me. I recall seeing one item shown as $300 marked down from $319. That is less than a 6% discount and with the tickets to the show at nominally $15 and car parking at $6, I don't think that you would go in there just for that level of pricing.

They had lots of router bits and having bought a few recently from toys4theboys.com at runout prices, I was interested to see what prices they were charging but no prices were marked and I did not linger to find out.

I suspect that the prices there were no better than what you could get at any dealer by laying cash on the table. They have a competition running to win some Triton gear but you have to buy some stuff to get entry.

I don't recall seeing GMC anywhere.

They had the new wet sharpner priced at $175. Not much of a show special in my opinion. Very disappointed in the stand.

In fact, dissappointed in general, a lot of empty spaces, a lot of people missing.

Triton stand very disappointing. We got there early and product was still in the boxes. Th big thicknesser was there for, I think, $799. I think that this is about $100 less than the Bunnies catalogue. No demos. It's the first stand inside the door but I only spent a few minutes there.

I went there with the intention of having a serious look at the Jet super saw but decided it was more than I am likely to need. Instead I got fairly interested in the Jet Proshop table saw JPS-10TS for $1500. The only thing that I did not like about it was having to work from the right side of the fence. I will search the forums for comments on this saw. My mate commented that the anti kick back fingers were likely to mark the timber.

All in all enjoyed the day.

I went past at the end of the day and they had posit-it notes with prices on the router bits and they were around the same price as on ebay.

The best deal there is the respirator for $200 normally just under $300 .

When I got my ticket at the woodworking show, showing my $2 discount Club Woody voucher, they gave me a free ticket to back into the show after 2 pm on Sunday.

The question is, are the prices usually dropped enough on the late Sunday afternoon good enough to give up my afternoon sleep and go in for another look?

I went to the ww show this today. Usually spend hours there, but this year was ready to come home just after lunch. Managed to extend it out by staying to watch a demo on veneering.

As for the Triton stand, certainly not much there compared to previous yrs. I did pick up the 82mm Planer for $85, which i thought was a good buy. Looked at the Superjaws at $169, but wasnt that much of a bargin to want to buy it.

The triton stand was a mixed bag. I got the finger jointer for $119. The router bits were cheap some other stuff barely marked down at all. The respirator is under $200 at bunnings, or was when I bought it.

I learned something. The tra001 is apparently older than the smaller one and lacks the facility for the winder handle. Very frustrating. They had the template kit for $39 and the accessories kit for $35, but I was told the accessories kit only fits the smaller router. Very annoying.

I was told a few weeks that Triton would not be at the show, this would have been the first time in many years that Triton demonstrators would have not been there to both demonstrate what is for sale as well as help with technical help to those folks who are not usually able to get to normally scheduled demos. I am pleased to see that Triton was represented by the same same distributor as has for the last few years, they had a team to sell the products with the assistance of the GMC reps. Imagine a car mechanic being asked to repair and work on a motorcycle - it's an engine that works in the same way a car engine does but it's not want they ar tranined to do - a motorcycle mechainc would do a batter job a fraction of the time. I feel the sales team on the stand do not know the product ANY WHERE NEAR as well as demonstrators do, I can only agree with the other comments here by saying I am disappointed in the stand. It is the same size as normal but without the demos so the sales area was greater but with less products.

Interesting that you say "they were assisted by GMC reps". Well last time I checked GMC reps are also Triton reps and have been for 3 years!!! YOu would think they may have picked up a thing or two after selling it too blokes like you for 3 years!!
Unfortunately in this crap retail climate at the moment businesses always look at costs. As such we decided to try something different and not have demos and instead go with actually trying to sell the gear!! All the previous messages are all doom and gloom and how crap the stand was......we had the same result as last year doing the same amount of dollars without demo's........intersting result hey!

Eagle, will there be Triton/GMC at the Sydney show. Will they have the bit's and bob's for the Baby router (MOF001). On the look out for the spanner/ 1/4" collet/fence etc since Bunnies conveniently "lost" those bits for the display router.

If they are there, I think that you may be disappointed if the Brisbane show is anything to go by. There were negligible "bits and bobs". It was just a stand full of cardboard boxes containing the full Triton products to be sold.

Ah, Eagle my Good Man ,

Seeing as you're tuned in, is there any chance of coming good on your undertaking in another thread a couple of months ago to actually redivert the web-site Catalogue download link to a PDF of the latest available catalogue (which would be?)?

The other thing is, do you know anything about any proposed drill that Triton might replace the Cordless Plunger with (I just want to torture myself a bit by thinking about what I would have been able to get instead by not panicking instead of grabbing the last brand-new Cordless Plunge Drill in Brisbania - great drill though .)

Maybe you could tell us a bit more about the proposed Portable Powered Router Table too (some of us missed out on that One-Step-Short-Of-Looting frenzy that just occurred with the BigB clearance of the 1400w Router... )

And what the heck happened with the GMC TS3000? (couldn't find a "One Eyebrow Raised" Smiley...)

    Cheerio,
    Batpig.
