    Default DIY Log holder

I made some log jaws from scraps & a few screws in under 1 hour.
2 Pieces of 15cm x 15cm x 3cm Jarrah. Remove original cheeks from jaws, bolt on the new ones. Drill pilot holes & insert chipboard screws.

It works great, even on 2m & 30cm logs, plus no more bending over to chainsaw logs. The first one is made from 3cm Marine ply & the bolts pulled through, so made the Jarrah one.

Very simple and effective by the looks.

One problem with using fixed parallel jaws is that they are not so good at holding a roundish tapering piece of wood, so a small improvement would be to modify one of the jaws so that they rock in the middle like the front jaw on this vice.

An alternative would be to use longer tek screws so they don't screw in all the way and adjust the length to suit the wood shape.

Yes, I can see where you are coming from with that.

Tapering logs are not a problem for me, as they do not vary that much in the 15cm length that is in the vice.

As for adjusting the screw length I don't think that is needed, as long as 2 screws in each side are in contact they will hold ok.

    good points
I was thinking more of folks cutting up fire wood and appreciate that woodworkers are unlikely to select rapidly tapering pieces of wood.
