    Default GMC 2000W 318mm Planer/Thicknesser

My GMC 2000W 318mm Planer/Thicknesser has just broken a drive belt. I am currently trying to get one made, but was wondering if anyone had already found a suitable supplier for a replacement, as there is no adjustment it needs to be an good fit.

When I bought mine I saw other brands that looked very similar, if not identical and was hoping that someone could advise me an alternate brand replacement. I have tried Ryobi, but they are currently in the process of changing location from Melbourne to Sydney and are otherwise engaged at the moment.

I was able to retrieve part of the belt and it was about 140mm long and the pulley has 6 grooves. The outside measurement between the two outside grooves is 14mm.

I also emailed the new GMC, but of course they did not respond to my inquiry.

I got a drive belt for my GMC belt sander from Timbercon in Perth, it's from a Sherwood sander, which is pretty well exactly the same.
So maybe check out belts from Sherwood.

Try GBT Tools, Hume Hwy,Campbellfield, Vic. Sorry do not have their number

They got all the parts when GMC went under but do not know what they have left now.

If it is the early GMC thicknesser, the motor etc was very similar to Carbatec and Hafco models so the belt may also be the same. The later models of GMC had a smaller motor

    G'Day Brian,
If it's a "polyrib" belt a good industrail engineers supplier or bearing suppliers should be able to source one for you.

Firstly I would like to correct my initial dimensions. The belt is a 6 rib, 143mm long (measureing around the outsides of both pulleys) - and the outside width of pulley is16mm.

I have checked with Timbercon, nut their shortest is 150mm. I have not heard back from GBT tools yet.

I have also been to a couple of bearing/seal/belt distributors, but no one seems to be greatly interested. I will try to source a manufacturer direct and also see if it is feasible to pack some shims under the motor to increase the length to 150mm.

    Thanks for your assistance.

If it is the same one as the $199 special from a few years ago then I think it is the same as Hares and Forbes version. A few members were getting bits from them such as the dust hood.

If the difference is 7mm, you will only need 3.5mm of shims (3.5 + 3.5 =7)

Just an update to say that I found an identical replacement.

I remembered that I saw other planer/thicknessers identical to mine when I bought it. A search of different woodwork suppliers located a CarbaTec planer/thicknesser identical to mine and still in supply.

After contacting Carbatec in Brisbane (07-33905888) I came up with the identical belt. $37.
