Interesting...
Before I go any further, I am not having a go at Triton and yes I know that there are many others factors involved in this story. So here goes....
I purchase an ex demo Triton Workcentre 200 early this year from bunnies real cheap. It was missing a few bits (I suspect browsers may have pinched them for spares) but I did some research and worked out that even after buying the missing bits it was still a great deal. Anyway, it sat as was in the shed for a long time due to lack of time and budget to get it going. A month ago I had the chance of buying a Durden Pacemaker for an absolute bargain which filled all the gaps in my woodworking needs, so the Triton became redundant.
My FIL is building a new house and when he found out that I needed to sell the Triton he wanted to buy it for what I payed as long as I organised a list of what needed replacing and helped to get it going. So...I got a list together and gave him the number for Triton spare parts. But, he was in his local hardware shop (not bunnies) and asked the blokes there if they could get the parts for him as it was more convenient and they did.
Here is the strange part. The total cost of the parts from his hardware shop was cheaper on every item than getting them from Triton directly and he didn't have to pay postage either. I know there are many reason behind this but thought that buying direct from the manufacturer (excluding postage) would be the cheaper way to go. Obviously not.Have a nice day - Cheers

Wood Butcher, that doesn't surprise me. Normally a retailer buys from the wholesaler or manufacturer at retail minus a certain percentage.
The retailer then has the choice to sell it at recommended retail or somewhere between his cost and recommended retail.
Obviously your local hardware store has sold the items below recommended retail, whereas Triton really has no choice but to sell at recommended retail. If they didn't they would be competing with their own customers, the retailer, and they wouldn't keep those customers for very long.

Pretty common for manufacturers that do actually sell to the public, to pitch their prices above what their retailers will charge.
Serves to discourage retail custom from the mfr, and not get their retailers offside.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
