    Default Leigh Dovetail Jig

Have just been asked if the Triton Router will fit a Leigh Dovetail Jig.

As I do not own a Leigh, any ideas?

If it does fit, with some modifications, what modifications required?

    Thanks

    Steve

    Steve,
Any router will fit you simply need a guide bush to suit the jig. There should be a standard unit made by Leigh that will fit the Triton but I would suggest you check the supplier to confirm.

    Default Guide Bush

    Thanks John,

Next question gets down to the guide bush. Anyone know if the Triton Template guide bushes will suit or not?

The bush is critical to the jig, I would be inclined to use the Leigh unit even if I thought I had the right unit. The Leigh unit is to expensive to acquire to only cut corners on a $20 to $30 bush.

I have the D1600 and the template guide says that for Triton you use the triton guide bush plate and then a 711Tp which is a round brass template guide that screws into the central hole of the triton template guide plate.

The 711TP supplied with the Leigh Jigs will also screw into industry standard 30mm holes. There are a number of clear perspex baseplates available that you could use instead of the Triton adapter plate. I believe from a previous thread that the baseplate screw positions of the triton emulate a porter cable unit.

The 711TP is very similar to the brass template guides on page 130 of the current Carbatec catalogue. On the same page they list a clear perspex Universal Router Base Plate with the 30mm for $29

It is important to use the genuine Leigh Guide in the centre rather than others on the market as it is not only the diameter that is critical but also the length of the "sleeve"

Hi Steve, I dont own a Leigh jig either but i researched it a lot before i bought the woodrat. Yes the triton router is suitable, BUT, as for all dovetail jigs where the router is used handheld, the physical attributes of the user also need to be taken into consideration. at any woodshow demonstration of a dovetail jig you will see the demonstrators using very light routers (exception being Roger Gifkins, he uses a triton in a table).
not being racist here but your japanese mates arent reknown for their body size and might therefore tire quickly hefting either of the triton routers in and out of a leigh jig, not to mention accuurate control of such a large beast. just a thought

I have the D1600 and us the Triton router. The guide provided with the D1600 fits on the router OK and works. However, because it has no openings any vacuum system connected to the router will prove to be useless. I use the Triton guide as this enables a vacuum to be used.

BobR you must be a big lad as I found man handling the 7kg Triton router with the Leigh or any other dovetail jig a handfull. I found that a light weight 1/4" router at 3kgs or so was ideal and provided must better control
With all Leigh jig demonstartion in the UK they use the Festool router as the handle system is ideal but very pricey

Barry, the first time I used the Triton with the jig there was much concentration. After a few exercises it was fine. However, I am thinking of getting the 1400 Triton for future work and fixing the big one into a table.

    Default Well done Gentlemen!!!

Greenies to all that I am allowed to give to.

Doug, I agree with you that the beast is big for little hands. The other alternative on the Japanese market is laminate trimmers, or some fairly dicy 6mm routers.

Once the smaller Triton is on the market, I think it will be more appropriate.

Just finnished cutting the lawn for the first time in at least a year. Something I really miss about living out of Oz, the satisfaction of looking over a freshly cut lawn. Who cares that it will grow back before long, feels good as one wheels the mower to the shed.

    Thanks again.

Mate i dont think the smaller triton is going to be much better for use in a hand-held dovetail jig. surely theres something in between that and the 6mm collet routers you mention. if not maybe there is another business opportunity for you, gmc maybe?

The 1400W router is only 1Kg lighter - I used one last weekend and its too heavy as a handheld for a dovetail jig in my opinion.
