Thanks for experimenting - perhaps another way to do this might be to reuse the original screwdriver handle (if it hasn't been destroyed in the process). Drill a hole through the body of the handle, insert shaft to the correct length, drill a hole through the handle and shaft and use a small nail as a locking pin? I'll try this when I'm next near a dollar store.

Good idea
Also a 'R' clip will do the same and easy to remove. I too had a think about the problem. Have a talk to any engineers shop about a 8mm? dia rod being bent and then the option of a Break Press 'U' shape being "thumped " on it at your spec's. The Press will certainly give the muscle for the task.

Thanks for all the offers of help - I found an eBay seller "triton way" who had some locking pins so all good - the price was moderately exorbitant but compared to an ill functioning workbench - I'm happy

Success
Having failed in my previous attempt to make locking pins (see above) I thought of a different way of making them.
These are made from aluminium rod with steel inserts.
They won't win a metalwork contest but they work.
The three on the right are my prototypes (don't mention the 1st prototype), while the four at the left are 'production' models.
