    Default Motor or armature for 2000 Watt GMC Thicknesser (13 inch/330mm)

    Hi All,

    I have started a new thread in the "Wanted/Australia" forum seeking suitable parts for my GMC 2000 watt thickness planer (330mm/13 inch).

    The armature on has developed a short in a section of 4 of the 32 commutator bars.

    I am hoping to obtain a working motor assembly or working armature from a wrecked GMC thicknesser of the same model, or equivalent parts from a 2000 watt motor used on other makes.

    All the later "clones" I can find mention of ("909" for example) specify a 1500 watt motor.

    Can anyone help or advise of another brand/model I can chase for parts that would suit?

    Does anyone need the rest of the machine if I cannot find parts?IMG_20210912_181603.jpgsnake4.jpg

    I am in far north Qld. and have had good service from the machine until now for my hobbyist uses. I replaced the brushes and an armature bearing during its working life.

    Stupid question possibly, but have you cleaned between the commutator segments?
    Do you have a manual with the part no.?

    Thanks. Yes, after the problem developed, I replaced the brushes, sanded back the commutator with 1000 grit paper and then carefully cleaned the gaps between the commutator bars with a knifepoint.
    After this process, it sparked even more in the fractions of a second it took to trip both the overload switch on the motor, and my shed ELCB.
    The new brushes had burned or chipped unevenly on one edge and the shiny commutator was now darkened, as shown in the image above.
    I did the usual tests with a multimeter, and repeated the "180 degree test" 3 times to confirm the "shorted" section on the commutator was reading about half (0.8-0.9 Ohms) of the resistance (1.7-1.8 Ohms) as the other opposing bars.
    The test between pairs of bars was normal (0.5-0.6 Ohms), and the circuit was open between all bars and the shaft and stack.
    No, I have no parts diagram and cannot find one online.

    I have a bent version of one of those down here in the ACT that was working before it took a top side dive to the floor, suspect the armature is fine, shipping unfortunately may be prohibitive, shame i can't schedule a holiday, love the area.

    Well that is a great start!

    Short of getting the Members for Kennedy and Leichardt to take it back up as 34kg of carry-on baggage, I dont know anyone going to and fro from Canberra.

    What is your postcode? I will get quotes from "Pack and Send", and the "E-go" mentioned in the comment below. I had never heard of "E-Go".

    There is also the Forum for interstate carriage of woodworking items, although COVID border closures will have played havoc with that nice little opportunity. I am in Malanda Men's Shed and there may be some opportunity through that network too.

    That must have been one hell of a crash!

    yeah border closures are an issue, your literally welcome to anything that is useful, the crash was epic, I'd used it the day before and was just moving the table it was on, turned out it wasn't bolted done and it took top first 900mm drop to the floor.. oops

    it's one of the blue ones with the big 2000w lettering, as you can see the fall cracked the motor cased so i'm happy to pull this apart on the weekend and get some photo's of the armature... it never did a lot of work so suspect it's all ok

    I will measure the armature shaft length (etc) to confirm it is the same as yours, too, as my motor housing is different.

    Hi Phil,

    You may find difficulty (like I did) in taking apart the motor. The pulley is reverse thread (so it is loosened in a clockwise direction). If you cannot remove it, the length between outer rim of pulley and end of shaft is about 235mm (see pic below...not measured accurately). The shaft is about 11.75mm in diameter just upstream from the pulley.

    Hi Mike,

    Never got quite that far and i suspect that the overall assembly is a bolt in replacement so here is a photo of the mount holes, under it you can see one of the brushes i pulled out to check, that is an original (never replaced)

    The motor would seem to be shorter, the fan is around the 190mm mark from the belt pulley

    Thanks, Phil. It is a completely different motor than mine. Both are 2000 Watt, but mine is much earlier as it does not have a gearbox.

    Thanks for taking the toruble to dismantle it.

    I suspect there will be others down the track seeking spare parts so it would be prudent to keep them or advertise them on this forum.

    I have seen that such "lunchbox thickness planers" often fail when the feed starts missing and jerking as the chain skips a tooth. The block-shaped bushes supporting the feeder rollers get flogged out, loosening the chain and causing it to skip on the cogs you photographed.

    I am kicking myself that we had a Ryobi donated to the Malanda Men's Shed that was junked because of such flogged bushes and inability to source replacements. I should have grabbed it and parted it out. Motor might have fitted mine!!! ???

    Thanks again. My quest continues!
