That is because not too many people can afford Festool, Triton is at least in reach price-wise.

Triton? i'm a 9 ply kinda guy myself.Only last week i came on here giving lee valley a great wrap for service, and that was just over the net.

Hmmmmm why could that be??? with festool prices you shouldnt have a problem - with triton quality you shouldnt have a problem - with GMC satisfaction and replacemment warranty there shouldnt be a problem. BUt when any of these cultures mix and one price/'quality range is assessed against the others.............theres gonna be a problem!

If one just shelled out $1000 for what everyone else sells for $276 and it died, perhap one would be somewhat hesistant about publicising the fact?

Alternatively with a GP of around 89%, maybe Fesfool can easily afford blue riband customer service?

Bit of both perhaps? Add to this that the majority of Forum contributors would never dream of paying a 300% premium on a tool.

Having aired one of my prejudices, I am left wondering what happened to the Restrictive Trade Practices thread, on our Swiss friends, that was galloping along for a while?

I have 1/2 a cupboard full of some of them brands that havent got more than 5-10 hours use on them, all hammered ie )bent this broke that on switches jambed or intermittent etc) but yet some i never removed from the boxes for 12 months or more for reasons of purchasing them CHEAP/received as PRESENTS in the hope they would be there when needed.

I'm not expecting that there are not issues, but that the Triton board has always been a bit of a gripe area, and it'd be really nice if we could get past that, and get back to the real name of the game- using the tools to make sawdust, and asking/talking about how to get the best out of the products, jigs, and techniques.

Good points Stuart.

Perhaps the equipment you are talking about is used by a large range of users. These might include those who are starting out, those who are unfamiliar with the type of tools concerned and those who have a budget where they are hoping that the one tool will perform miracles.

There are also those who have experienced quality problems.

There are also many users who are experienced and who have developed work arounds or understand the limitiations of some of the equipment such as yourself.

I agree with Stuart, we are judging Triton a lot harder than the others. Maybe they had the service level that everyone should have had and they are just coming back to the pack.

Where did you get the 89% gross profit number? Was that published somewhere?

I am not an apologist for Festool, believing instead that we get ripped off here compared to American prices for the same tool on similar import costs.
There tools are very good, though. If I was making a living with power tools I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Festool for whatever job I had at hand. Anything less seems to me would be a time waster chasing after service or replacements.

Restraint of trade would only be an issue if Festool was trying to regulate the price of EVERY sander or drill sold on the market. Since the competition is robust in these categories the consumer can't argue injury. (Although I wish it were otherwise)*

Disagree Greg. I read the section in the act (which I posted here). No so much restraint of trade more resale price maintenance I think.

Hi Bodgy...Can you send a pointer to the act? I'd like to give it a read. I have hashed this out with every Festool dealer that I have spoken with, and they all say the same thing about Festool's price policy, so I know that it comes from head Office.

They apparently have an inventory program that tracks sale price as well, so they can tell if discounting is going on. Two dealers told me they were given a stern warning from Festool when caught discounting. The only way that you can get ahead is to lump a purchase with some other product-make it a deal-breaker to get a hefty discount on the non-Festool product.
