    Question overhead dust extraction

I have a Mk3 workcentre, and was just wandering if I can cut a port into the standard overhead guard for dust extraction or do have to buy the special guard.

    Thanks TIM

    Tim,
I have cut a port into a Mk3 overhead guard. I use a vacumn cleaner and home made cyclone and use vaumn cleaner hose so I used one of the original accesories that came with the vac for the port.
I just marked where I wanted the port, pulled the guard apart and carefully cut the two halves, screwed it back together and areldited the port in. Works okay.

Tried and failed, had to buy the special guard. Others may have had better luck.

You didn't have a problem with the plastic spliting?

    Ross,
I had no probs with splitting. Where are you getting your splitting?
From memory I would have cut it with a fine toothed coping saw. I had a look at it on the weeknd and it is a bit rough but no splitting.

Jon Do you have any problems with the weight of the hose pulling the splitter out of line ?

    Ross,
yes I need to ensure that the weight of the hose isn't pulling sideways.
If I am doing short or narrow cuts I can have it coming up from behind the table but if it is a long wide rip I have the hose to the side of the table and lightly clamp it to relieve the weight.
You will probably be able to have hose behind the table most of the time. When I cut the port into the guard I did it on an a slight angle facing backwards because of this.
