Thread: Router collets for Triton Routers

Not quite sure on what you're asking here, are you asking if they come with 1/2" collet and 1/4" reducing bush or if one comes with the 1/4" & 1/2" USA style Collets as Explained in this thread?

Or if the collets are interchangeable between the two routers?

What i mean is will the collet from the MOF001 fit in to the TRA001. Like the actual screw in bit.

If they are the same style collet, then yes they will fit either router.

Sorry to be late to reply (time difference), but the answer will depend whereabouts in the World you are.

In the UK, the TRA001 came with the Hitachi-style collet - a coarse-threaded male collet nut which screwed into a female collet chuck:





whereas the MOF001 came with the self-releasing style collet - a fine-threaded female collet nut that screwed onto a male collet chuck adaptor.






As already said, if both routers have the same style, then they're interchangeable. If not, then they're definitely not interchangeable.

I thought that, in Australia, both routers came with the Hitachi-style collets, the self-releasing ones being available elsewhere as a retro-fit. In the US, both models now use the self-releasing style I believe, although they started out like the UK, with differing styles per model.

BTW, it's not necessarily good practice to use parts of one collet in another collet chuck, as the shoulder or vane wear tolerances may differ, causing a slip or (less likely) a jam.

Just to confirm.....The current specification distributed by Carba-Tec in Australia:

Triton TRA001B 3-1/4HP (2400W) (or TRA001-AUS as it may be marked on the box), HAS the dedicated 1/2" and 1/4" removable collets (female threaded collet onto male chuck)


The previous model sold on the Australian market had the older (Male collet nut threaded into female chuck)

I have adapted my 2400 to a router table, but when I went to use the 1/2" collet with a 1/2" shank it would not fit. After struggling to remove the collet and measure its size I realised I had a problem. Carba-Tec, who sold me the router, were perplexed when after trying 3 collets, one fitted. The salesperson was pleased until I gave him a bit that was 0.478" in diameter, which was sloppy. After screwing the nut that assists in tightening the collet to the point when it almost bottomed out, he sait "look it's tight".

The problem is I don't know if the 2400 router has a self extracting facility, but the collet is jammed in so tight that I can't get it out, and I don't know how to. Any ideas?
So, I have the 1/4" Triton collet that came with the kit, and which I need to use - when i get the 1/2" out.

After almost giving up on what measly work I do, I went up a grade and bought more tools. Now, I find that at 80, I'm wanting a much easier lifestyle and less tool troubles.

I need help and will appreciate it very much.

I'm not sure you should have been trying to use a bit that was only 0.478' diameter, but as to how to undo, when I have been overtight when doing up I use a hammer or mallet on the spanner to undo. Is there a reason you can't do that? Or have I misunderstood your problem?

Are you sure your .478" bit isn't 12mm? It would appear that the salesperson was an idiot and should have known better than to have tightened an undersized bit in the collet. I'd take it back to Carbatec, ask for someone who knows what they're doing, and get them to fix it. The collet will be ruined and will have to be replaced.

If you can use a 12mm collet I have a new one I can supply.
