Router Too Fast?
I'm a long time user (not loser) of the BIG Triton router in a table. After reading the Gifkins dovetail instructions (not for the first time) it was recommended to run the router on the fastest speed. I did this and it worked OK but:
* The height locking mechanism vibrated off and
* The switch mechanism failed to close over making me change bits from just under the table (wouldn't go all the way up). Finally got the switch mechanism to close over and gave it a few squirts of silicon.
I since changed down a few cogs and run it on 3 which does OK and no mishaps since. On top speed it was really vibrating.
Any comments or similar experiences?

No indication of bit size, but assuming 1/2 inch or less, it should be almost vibration free at any speed asuming that the router to table mounting is fairly solid, the bit is balanced, and hasn't been damaged an some way.
Re balance, the bits have a bearing and retainer on the shank between the carbide and the router collet. The retaining ring should have it's hex set screw just below the outer diameter, and the bearing should run smoothly without grabbing. A missing or incorrect length setscrew will affect the balance of the bit and might induce vibration.
Router bearings may be starting to develop a bit of play and reducing overall rigidity of system.
1/4 inch shank bits and reducer sleeve, you might have to rotate the sleeve relative to the collet to find a sweet spot. It should not be an issue if the collet and reducer are both in good condition but some people have reported problems with the Triton reducer.
I certainly have not had hassles with my old Mak router (single speed) with bits from 1/8in (1/4 shank and reducer) to 19mm (1/2 shank). Have a TRA001 to going into a table but still working on putting it all together.

Thank you for the feedback gentlemen. I must admit to being a bit worried when the triton packed up. But all going well now. I still don't like the idea of running it on full throttle for light work.
