Default Should I sell or Store my triton gear

    Hi guys

I have moved to central Queensland (from far north Queensland) for work .... and I have left my shed behind . It will be a number of years (approx 4) before I build another shed (to my requirements.. a garden shed is a little to small).

Should/could I store the triton gear (and will it last stored ??) or should I sell my gear and updated when the new shed is completed??

Gear to be stored/ or sold

    Workcentre 2000
    235mm Triton Circular Saw
    Router Stand
    1/2' triton router
    1/2' Makita router
    Triton Multi Stand
    Biscuit Joiner (triton)
    Roybi Biscuit Joiner
    Air Compresser
    Air Nail Gun
    Drills and 5ft Drill Press

    and on and on

Store or Sell .... and what the best way to sell ... ebay or garge sale ?

    Cheers

    Michael

Well the one advantage of selling now is that you get to "shop till you drop" when you eventually get around to sorting out a new shed. Down side is that you wont recoup the cost. Tough one this. What's the rust/humidity factor like where the stuff will be stored? This could push you to sell. On the other hand if you are comfortable with the tools and they perform to you satisfaction then it's a costly exercise to replace them all. Then again many things change in four years, you may move onto bigger and better things or may even lose interest in woodworking?

It looks like you Aussies call it a 'shed', the Yanks refer to it as a 'shop' whilst here in SA we just use the term 'work shop'.

    ebay, definitely
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

I get an impression that private sales may sometimes be better, ie something like Trading Post, if you have the time to test the market. If that does not work, then try ebay. Course, that assumes you can sell instead of storing.
Good luck, whichever way you go.

If you store it, I'm guessing you will have to pay for storage? Or are you keeping your current residence & planning on going back?

If you sell it, remember that the money you get for it today will be less than you paid for it, and when you go to replace it the cost of new items will have risen by at least the rate of inflation & banks will have paid stuff all interest on it if you manage to keep it rather than spending it on some other 'essential' items. Then there is the question of wether the Triton 2000 will still be in production in 4-5 years time.

I think you should sell it but why don't you start a poll and get everyones opinion...

Hmm.. This would depend on the amount of storage space you have and as Hilton said the quality of this (humidity etc).

I personally would keep hold of the Power Tools (Triton Saw, Router(s), Air Tools, and sell the Workcentre w/accessories, Drill Press and MultiStands. This way you still have your quality tools that you will never recoup money on, and would most regret selling, as you would probably end up buying them again.

As Just George Said put a poll on this post.

    Cheers

I agree with waynea - store all your hand tools (and maybe the drill press) if you have the space. Make sure you protect them ie oil, grease etc. and place them in sealed containers with some silica gel (dry it well in an oven first). That is unless money is no problem for replacement gear By the time you get to build the ultimate shed you may want to go with a standard saw bench, etc. depending upon what you are making.

Remember that quality tools never go out of fashion, and that 4 yrs sounds like a long time now but will pass quickly.

If you have somewhere to store it and have ready access I would go that option, no doubt in a few months you will want to cut, drill or route something.

Otherwise if you sell the gear, as has been said, the replacement cost will go up, and the cash will go down, because you've bought something else.

Interestingly triton products hold their value very well. I have always been of the opinion that unless you need the cash and have an out of the way storage place, then hang onto to it. It will be shortly after you sell up you'll be wanting it back.

A great alternative is to store it at a friends place who will get some use while you are not needing it. As long as they can be trusted to look after it of course!

My previous experience with 'Ebaying' odd bits of unwanted Triton gear was very good.

Truth is...you probably wont reduce the value of it by hanging on to it for a few years (as long as there is no added cost in doing this). Even 4/5 years from now, if you want to sell it - you'll get pretty well the same money anyway. A Series 2000 thats 8 years old sells for the same as a 1 year old one if there both in good knick.
