Default Squaring a Triton sliding extension with a MK3 bench

    Hi all

Second post ever here and thought I would start with asking a question to utilise the knowledge base on the forum.

I have a triton MK3 and recently added the maxi sliding extension. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to get it cutting square, there always seem to be 3-4mm difference over a 1.2m cut. I have been locking the fence on 1000mm and measuring to the front and back of the blade so they are spot on 1000 at the trailing edge and then swapping over to do the same on the leading edge to front and back of the blade, even to the point of lining the tape measure up with a set square to ensure the correct measurement. I found a post on here from someone that found the sliding table was not square so I made sure that was spot on and tried again to no avail.

If anyone has any tips and tricks they could share that may help me I would really appreciate it. If that sort of tolerance is all I can expect it may be time to upgrade to a proper bench saw but I would prefer not to just yet.

    Thanks for your help.

3-4mm over a 1200mm cut is way out. I have the mini extension fitted to my S2000 table and I can get it spot on. But the very first thing I would look for is the actual saw mounting; make sure it is dead square to the table and the bars. Make sure the bars are locked in tight and when you lock the table into the rip mode that there is no play.

When you lock the fence at a set distance you've got to make sure the workpiece is in constant contact with the fence but with no heavy side loading or you'll be just distort the assembly. Try doing a cut with someone watching if any gaps appear between the fence and the wood or if they can see the fence flexing.

If this is all good but it still cuts pi&&ed then the rules probably need calibrating; keep moving one end of the fence until the work finally cuts parallel, then move the rule to match the fence setting.

You don't say whether the innacuracy appears during sliding table cuts where the fence leads the work piece; is this also a problem? The sliding table outer needs to run with the outer bar running as close to the centre as possible, make sure the "bearing" sides never crash into the bar and always push from the same area or location each time. The maxi has material clamps; use them every time.

If you swing the fence around between rip and crosscut modes you need to "calibrate" it every time. My method is to have a 900 X 900 dead square sheet of 9mm MDF handy at all times. I put the tablesaw fence in the 45 degree mode and lay the sheet against what is now the back edge, overhanging onto the extension table. Then slide the extension table fence into the correct position hard up against the sheet edge and put a bit of pressure where you normall handle the work to take up any flex or "backlash". Tighten the fence and the job is done.

Thanks Chief. I think I will spend some time making sure the blade is spot on tomorrow and then have another go. There's every chance it may have shifted when I was lifting one of the large sheets on and accidentally knocked the blade, new rule for self, drop the blade when maneuvering large sheets into position.

The errors I was getting were in both modes but it was worse when I was sliding the table which lead me more towards the guide rails not being correct, I was using it with the fence on the side I was pushing from because the pieces were to wide to do the other way. I will also pay more attention to the outer guide rail, I have to admit I wasn't paying much attention to it.

At least the pieces I was cutting were large so once I get it set right I can salvage them to make the drawers and not go buy more melamine.

Once I get it right I can make a template like you have for calibrating it, I didn't realize that either, nice if it was in the manual.

Thanks for all your help and I hope to come back some time on the weekend with positive news. Then I can start posting pics of my cabinetwork prowess lol, maybe not for a first big project.
