Talk About Hitting The Roof...
haha,
so i built a router sled,
today i stuck my triton router in it and lowered it to have a dry run see how much adjustment room i had,
turned around to grab my ruler and BANG...
turned back around to see half of the plunge spring cap falling from the roof....
the other half was already on the floor across the workshop,
after a bit of a moment... i realised something and tipped the router upside down, and out came the little locking feet...
a picture tells a thousand words:
anybody else had this happen? or know why/how it could have happened?
the height adjustment has been playing up lately... probably needs a clean, bloody mdf dust...
and i guess i should talk to carbatec about replacement parts?
EDIT: while im at it the brass screw for the depth gauge... mine seems to be missing parts... i know theres meant to be a spring in there? minnes missing...
what else is meant to be in there... my screw doesnt reach the height gauge bar....
i love this router and use it for nothing but routing with template bits so it never occured to me to check if that heigh gauge thingy ever worked... till now lol
cheers

Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything, but they
bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs .

If Carbatec can't help you, I've probably got what you need.
Plus a new spring cap - have you still got the little cross-head locking screw?

ahhh so im missing the brass plug and knob spring! i might dig out the box and have a look see if theres any bits in there, but i highly doubt they came with the router when i got it...
the cross head screw is still on the router, didnt move when the cap popped off...
i will PM you if carbatec cant help me out.
cheers Ray
also, can i still use the router without the spring and spring cap on?
its not mechanical so i guess i can get away with it? just block it up so no dust gets in the tubes?

I had the same issue with both of mine Andrew, the cap actually hit me in the side of the face and luckily not my eye one one router.
The other happened after i`d just finished using it.
Hope you manage to source some parts,
cheers

Gday Brad, i watch your builds over at the gearheads forum
not good to hear about one hitting you in the face
bloody good router apart from this cap breaking
might have to do some surgery and figure out a way to fix it/hold it down so it wont happen again hmm

I recommend that - for inverted (table) use, the cap is left OFF anyway, allowing any dust to drop straight through. There's no need to block off the cap end, although you might save yourself some future cleaning by using a rubber washer to block the base of the tubes, as that is where most of the dust (especially MDF) gets in.
The only time you need the cap is when using the router and-held, but you can get away without it in that situation too - it's just much more fiddly and more difficult to adjust, as plunging can only be done with the right-hand handle in rack-and-pinion mode - not something you want to do unless you really have to!

i dont use a router table anymore, so this only gets hand held use,
i set its depth before use and lock it, and thats it,
iv never used the actual plunge feature on any of my routers... i have never seen the need..
my height adjustment using the right handle and the micro adjustment is already playing up, i doubt it would be too hard for me to cope with
in the way i use the router (set depth and lock)
mdf dust is bloody aweful stuff, sticks to absolutely everything too
ill give it a go and see what happens
cheers Ray
(while im out searching for triton router parts i may aswell look for replacement bushes for my triton circ saw! good thinking 99 )

just dont put your face over the bloody thing when using it
i want to know WHY it did this...
at first i thought i may not have turned it all the way so only the tips of the little locking feet caught on, letting them flex and snap off.... but the way the screw is positioned, thats not possible...
so comes my second theory, when i put the cap on, the spring kinked and caught the end of the rod inside the cap which created too much force as i lowered the height, which seconds later caused it to pop off...
hmmm wheres sherlock holmes when you need him....
im still shaken up from the noise it made when it shattered against the tin roof

looks like my last reply got deleted in that forum meltdown thingy,
i said something along the lines of:
i went to carbatec on monday, and gave them the part and details of the router,
and they ordered the part for me, and will email me when it arrives...
will be here in about 2 or 3 weeks i think
so if anyone else has this problem... carbatec can sort you out
