    Default TRA001 start issue

    Hello Triton router users,
i have a couple of TRA001 units purchased at different times.
My newest router has decided that it doesn’t want to run. I thought that there could be a problem with the speed control however I have swapped the control to the other unit and while there appears to be no real alteration in the router speed, when rotating the dial, which indicates a fault in the control, it does run on the functioning router. Which suggests to me that it’s not totally defective. ( The speed control )
Thinking about the main switch on the router, is it possible that there could be a problem with the safety slide that covers the switch when not in use and also prevents the slide from extending fully when changing bits in the collet.
Is it possible to access the switch by removing the cover around the switch ( held on by several screws ) or do I have to go further with disassembly.
I am hoping someone else may of had a similar issue and is prepared to comment.
Neither of my units have done much work and I am basically quite happy with them.
    Thank you in advance.
    Bill.

Have you tried switching the good speed controller over?

    Thank you for your suggestion.
Yes I did swap the good control unit to the faulty router and found that it made no difference. Which of course indicates that the issue is not the speed control.
I would like to check the switch and safety switch protector to see if there is any mechanical reason for this defect. If in fact the problem is electrical then I don’t have the knowledge to diagnose.
I thought that I should check on this site first, before I start ordering parts and start the process of elimination.
In this modern fast world the chances of finding an experienced repairer is fairly slim.
At least in this district where I live.
I guess in reality I am hoping to find some simple explanation for the issue. (Loose or broken wire for example)

I haven't struck this problem, but I recall some others have, and found dust in the switch to be the problem.

Thanks again for your assistance Chrism3.
I am happy to report that I have discovered the issue.
One of the brushes was not making contact on the motor shaft which of course prevents the motor from working.
There was a corrosion type built up in the brush assembly which was preventing the brush from reaching the motor. Fairly simple to clean and then reassemble.
once I did that everything slid into place and I now have a second router back in service.
I do think that most of the issue came about because these units don’t get much use.
The moist environment that we experience here during the ‘wet season’ doesn’t help either.
Hopefully this post may help others who experience a similar problem in the future.
    Bill.

You discovered the issue before I saw your thread. I had the same problem. In my case the brushes were sticking and not advancing far enough to make contact. Quite an easy fix for the repairer to make fortunately.

    Hello Bushmiller,
Yes a happy result and easy to fix.
I have contacted Carbatec and they have replacement brushes in stock ex Brisbane.
I reckon that I will purchase a set to have as spares.
    Happy days. Bill.

Thanks for that info. It is now on my list too, although I will phone ahead to double check they are in stock. The last time I visited a supplier in Brissy (Hare & Forbes) while I was visiting our daughter, they did not have the goods in stock, so I still had to pay postage and additionally had the fuel cost of travelling there.
