    Default TRA001 vs TRA002

    Hi All,u
I'm looking to buy my first router. I've decided on a Triton. The model we have in Australia is the TRA001 (actually TRA001B I think). When surfing the web I noticed on the UK Triton website they also have a TRA002. It looks different to the TRA001 but the specs appear to be identical. (link: Triton TRA002 ]. The TRA002 doesn't appear on the AUS or USA sites. Does anyone know anything about the TRA002? Is it a new model? Will it soon be available in Australia? Does it even matter?

    Thanks,

    Glenn

Looks like an update to the TRA001. Some knobs changed. You would need to ask Carbatec, the distributors, when it might be coming to Australia.

Thanks. I joined a long time ago, just as an interest and before I had anywhere to create a workshop. Then I worked overseas for many years and when I finally returned to Australia and had a shed I could turn into a worksop I then took a job that had me travelling away from home for weeks at a time. Now I stay home as much as I can, so finally have time to try out some woodworking.

(Oh, and WOOD really is my surname - nominitave determinism at work).

Thanks. I have contacted Carbatec and await a response.

Looks to me like the same router but in a different shell; a face-lifted model if you will.

What I immediately noticed and disliked is the new style guard and the missing dust collection port. I suspect this machine may be specifically designed for the new style workcentre router table and doesn’t need it but as anyone who uses a TRA001 can attest the in-base dust collection is right up there with the best. If a dust port is there I can’t see it; I did try to open the product sheet to see if it was hiding somewhere else on the machine but it won’t open for me.

For my money I’ll stick with the TRA001. Actually; as I have two I’ll stick with both!

    Mr Wood,
It helps other members sometimes to know which State you live in. Australia is a big place!

The metal plunge-locking lever is certainly an improvement over the awful plastic one on the TRA001.

    Hi All,

I've received a reply from Triton Tools:

The TRA002 has the following -
    • Modern engine technology
    • Improved Electronic Cruise Control
    • Improved dynamic load control
    • Extended maximum cutter diameter: 70 mm (previously 55 mm)
    • Extended maximum immersion depth: 68 mm (previously 65 mm)
    • New integrated LED work light
    • New Material: Mill body was plastic and now metal
    • New total dust extraction in the cutting area
    • New vertical dust extraction, swiveling 360 degrees

I laughed when I read "Improved Electronic Cruise Control". I got this mental image of a router driving down a motorway, dragging a long power cord!

No news on when it might be available in Australia yet.

I presume (and hope) that they have updated the design of the variable speed controller module, which has been the Achilles heel of all Triton routers for ages. Lost count of the number of forumites who have encountered this problem.

The silly thing was that they were replacing a clearly defective design with.......exactly the same item, so it could go on to fail again.

My old MOF001 went through two speed controller modules before I gave up and junked it.

Exactly what I was thinking. I would not buy another triton unless I could be sure they have solved the problems.

I have a new response from Carbatec. They say that they don't know when this new model will be available in Australia.
