Triton 3 in 1 sander

Does anyone know anything about the Triton 3 in 1 sander?

Particularly how it compares to the Carbetec 3 in 1.

I've seen the carbetec version in the flesh and the triton one only in pictures (seen the 2 in 1 in the shop, though).

According to the specs they are the same - except for the power rating. The carbetec is 1hp, the triton is 1/2hp. They look like they come out of the same factory - and this made me think the power rating could be a case of 'a label to order', ie they were likely to be the same machine, supplied to a different price point.

So last week I was quoted $467 for the triton and decided this was far enough away from the $799 quoted by carbetec to warrant the order (paid for it too). I should say, I only want it for small components like boxes. I figured I didn't really need a larger motor, if larger it was - at that price.

Anyway, today I get the call to say it''s in the shop, but the price has gone up. I've been offered it at 'cost price' of $594. A big jump - and now in reach of the $799 for the carbetec machine with potentially a motor that is double in size.

Clearly, the Triton ordering system sucks, and I'm annoyed, but don't want to bad mouth the retailer - he's been caught be the system too.

What should I do???
Aaarrgh. You know how it is when you order something and ebfore it even arrives, you have this long list f things you want to do with it. So you can't wait!

Can't comment on the sander, but if you were "quoted" $467 at the time of ordering it, that is the price you should be paying. It's not your fault if the retailer didn't confirm the price when he quoted it for you.

Yes, I tend to agree.

But in this case he has offered it at the higher price or a refund of what I've paid.

Jaspr, I'm no lawyer, but my understanding is that you have a contract with the supplier in particular because you have already paid for it. He is legally obliged to supply the goods you ordered and paid for.
His price going up is nothing to do with you.
If he had only quoted you it would be a different story, but you have paid for it already, hence his obligation.
There may be more "learned friends" that might correct me.

A phone call to Consumer Affairs or whatever will clear it up for you (and your supplier)

It would be nice to get it at the original price. But I don't think he will come to the party and I'm not sure I'd want to push it that much. A win/lose situation isn't all that appealing.

Wonder if he'd split the difference?

They are absolutely obliged to honour the deal, and the fact you have paid carries even more weight - they accepted and issued a receipt.

It is up to you if you want to "donate" the extra money to bring it up to their cost price. I've had this happen in the past - got my DSLR camera for almost 1/2 price, but I wasn't dealing with the retailer - they quoted the price to Choice shopper, then honoured it

As to the rest - it is what you think. They guys at Triton were raving about this tool a year ago as being exceptional, and definitely worth the Triton branding.

Yeh - I'm a wimp! I didn't push it. Though I probably should have. I just went back and got my money back. The only satisfaction being he will never see me again as a customer. That's pretty lame, I know!

I did go to Carbatec and have a close look at theirs. I got talked out of it by someone who should know what they were talking about. Was told that they are identical to the Triton (except maybe the motor), and that there had been a lot of returns due to unacceptable runout on the arbour of the spindle sander shaft. Also, you can't get sanding sleeves to fit. You have to buy Delta brand and either cut them off or leave them sticking out at the top.

It will be interesting to see if Triton have been able to overcome these problems.

As it was mainly the spindle sander I was after I've ordered one of the Jet copies with tilting table and five spindle sizes.

Carbatec Site shows their 3 in 1 on special for $569 at the moment

That one looks pretty good - $450 or so from memory.

I was going to say it would be worth checking out the brand-new Triton Spindle Sander, but I guess - too late.

I'm working on a video review of the Triton Spindle Sander at the moment. Main advantage of the Jet is the tilting table. Triton is $245. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the motivation Claire - have a few (still at the idea stage) in the pipeline. Hope to shoot one tonight on the spindle sander (if the little one goes to sleep easily!) So many ideas, so little time....

Been getting some industry interest, so that is very cool.
