Default Problem with Triton finger jointer

    Hi to all
I need some help with a Triton FJA 300 Finger Jointer that I have put together as per the
    assembly and operating instruction.
Everything went together well until it came to setting the 1/2 inch finger to the cutter.
The Cutter Surrounds obstructs the 1/2 finger which has to be set at 1/2 inch from the cutter before
starting work on making the joint.
I have watched all the videos I can find online but they don't cover the assembly of the jointer.
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Regards
    Little John

    Hi John
I've recently assembled and used this beast, although its all in storage until I build my new shed, so I cant look at it physically

I dont recall any probs with this, I cant quite envisage what you are describing, have you any photos etc that might help,

I’ve got one of those beasts hiding somewhere; post a photo of what you are trying to achieve and I’ll post one back of how it should look.

Ok, I pulled mine out and dusted off the instructions and can see where your issue is. Basically you are trying to set the finger to the cutter with the jointer assembly in the start or stop position; that is the only time the cutter surrounds are... well, surrounding the cutter. What you need to do is open the jointer up so that you have about 4 inches of open space between the fences. Then move the jointer roughly halfway so that the cutter is sitting in the open air between the fences, at this point the cutter will be fully exposed and the finger will also be sitting freely. Now you can grab a 1/2” spacer of some description (another cutter shank works fine) and set the gap between the cutter and the finger precisely.

Tip: a 1/2” template following bit is much easier to set the finger to than a cutter. Rather than stuffing around trying to get a cutter edge bang on at 90 degrees and slip in a 1/2” spacer while tightening the whole shebang you use the 1/2” bearing on the end of the follower bit.
