When it did break, why wasn't it a priority to fix the local market first?... The answer as I see it is money - there is more overseas, and it is easier setting up supply throughout Europe, North America, Japan, South Africa, than to fix the small local market.
    Hi Stu,
    Thanks for the info.
I guess my original question was to the fate of the (Taiwanese) routers as opposed to the fate of local manufacturing.

    Regarding the points you made:
Personally, I'm not too concerned about Australia being down the pecking order of markets. In fact, if concentrating on the OS supply chain helps ensure the viability of Triton, I am all for it. As for what happened in the past, well, you obviously know more than me, but it looks like diversifying to markets outside of Aus was a wise move, even if it came at the cost of losing the Aus market.

I mean, it's not as if any of the power tools were made in Australia anyway, so if you needed a part for the saw or router, it's not as if the part was being sourced locally anyway.

As for the Triton workstations, I'm not sure if you are hinting we risk losing that local manufacturing. It's not exactly hi tech manufacturing - pressed metal construction. Given all the tooling is here, and our cheap access to sheet steel, I would hope the future of the local operations is pretty good.

If Triton is so successful that we suffer shortages due to demand outstripping supply, then that is a problem I would be happy to live with.

wrong, they are still tied together. GMC and Triton are still going. Check the Seers website for the latest GMC mitre saw.

I guess you mean Sears, as in www.sears.com

Not sure what has been changed to that saw for it to be new - looks like the model that came out about 3 years ago? (Other than now being 15A, and a slightly different front foot)

If it is a new model, hope it has benefited from the hindsight. No TV camera/screen I see - wonder what happened to that model!

Another look at the model - guess it is new - big chinese motor straight out the side. The model I'm thinking of had the motor angled and run through a gearbox so that if you tilted the saw to that side, the motor didn't get in the way. Wonder how this design copes with a right-tilt?

Thanks for the info. I thought (well, had read) that GMC were dead and buried, but that Triton was going to live on. Guess I don't really know anything.
(Funny how the saw is listed for US$143 (about AU$174), but that here it would sell for $299. Actually, funny is not the right word .)

So is the below an accurate summary of the current situation?
    - DCI are currently manufacturing the pressed steel products for OS markets (and Oz once the distribution is figured out)
    - GMC continue to be manufactured in China for OS markets (but no word yet on any future Oz distribution)
    - No news yet on the fate of the Triton power tools

Still just wondering if the routers will ever be resurrected.

And Stu, are you confusing the LSMS250A with the DB250SMS?

Almost identical to my GMC that is about 3-4 years old, except

    No laser
The extra foot at the front
It only tilts 45 left, like mine. except my scale is on the side.
The scale for angles on mine is on teh top of teh round bed, with the pointer near the right hand fence
Dust bag is a different colour.

Is US 15 amp the same as our 15 amp, or is it only 7.5 as it is 120V vs. 240V
    15 amp x 120V = 1800W.
yet at the GMC site, ours were all 2400W

Yup - that's exactly what I've done. Got fooled by those high rails - they make the two look similar!

I have heard that we should be able to buy very limited Triton in Australia by October, hopefully just in time for some Chrissie presents to be bought!!

The range will be expanded as the company grows. Power Tools will be done again but I would think the Routers and Saws at the start and then other machines down the track.

Know if the 1000W Triton Router will finally make an appearance? How about the US collets? Any idea if the routers will now come with those bad boys? You didn't happen to get the shelves of the US collets in those spares you bought by chance? Just wondering (no, I don't need them, but there are plenty here that'd love to buy them!)

Ooh - October - just in time for the Melbourne Wood show!

Wouldn't that be awesome - but through their brand new partnership with Lowes of course - 150 or so stores planned for Oz. WooHoo!

I'm not sure losing ~500 odd independent hardware outlets would be such a good thing.
I don't understand yet how this deal would effect the relationship between Danks and the independents... probably a discussion for another thread.
