Question $84 at Bunnings Melville - 275W enough though?

Hi All, Just got back into Bunnings for the first time in many weeks.

Bunnings Melville have the Triton Random Orbital Sander at $84. It has 275 W of power and the random orbit seems to be 2-3mm from diagonal side points.

Next door to it was a Black & Decker 400W ROS for $99. Both are 125mm sanding pad size. Has anyone bought the Black & Decker?

Is 275 W enough for doing big areas like table tops and house eaves?

Also, is it worth spending the extra $60 and getting an even bigger ROS with a 150 mm sanding pad size?

    Best regards,

    Interwood

I have the Triton ROS and while its pretty good for most jobs, I'm not sure that it would be suitable for eaves or a table top.

Re the eaves, thats a lot of sanding and I don't think any 125mm ROS would be up to that. But then that depends on far back you need to sand. If it was a light sand to clear a bit of peeling paint yes but to go back to base material for a whole house, well that is lot of work. Your hands will be buzzing for hours.

For a table top, the bigger the better as that stops you getting rolling waves in the surface. The best unit I have ever seen was a triple headed ROS at the WWW show in Sydney and that used 300 to 400mm discs on each head. Very expensive but I think you hire those units.

Recently sanded some eaves and used a belt sander. Tried first with ROS but took forever. The belt sander tackled the job quickly and easily.

Saying that, however, the Triton ROS is still not a bad little sander at all.

I've been using mine all day today on some cubbyhouse furniture I'm making. A really nice unit I must say- a lot more control than I had with the previous Triton ROS (the angle grinder accessory). Granted that was fitted to a Dewalt 700W grinder!!! I'll still use that one for some jobs - when I need fast stock removal (and don't want to revert to a belt sander). Having onboard dust collection is a nice change as well.

Thumbs down Went to buy Triton ROS ... but not stocked

Thanks everybody for your helpful advice.

Unfortunately the two stores that I went to today to buy the Triton ROS (both National Chains:eek::confused:  ) don't stock it!

So made the hard decision and bought my first non-colour matched tool since starting woodworking three years ago. The Bosch 400 W ROS seems to have everything that I was expecting the Triton ROS to be, plus 125 W more power and a bit heavier all round.

Another advantage I didn't foresee - it's easy to find in the sea of Orange that is my workshop. It also does a great job on the Eaves (Paint) and it performed well on some rusted fixtures.

I feel a little strange not buying Triton ... but with fuel prices going up, I can't drive all over WA to find someone who does sell it.

    Have a great weekend.

Heavier? You might still end up cavorting the Triton in the end.....

Two stores not stocking Triton ROS - BUNNINGS Willeton WA, No longer stocking ANY TRITON (Confirmed with Manager) and Carbatec WA not stocking Triton ROS (Confirmed with Manager).

Bunnings Melville have moved some Triton gear in with other similar products (ie drill with drills, Saw with Saws etc) but most items including the ROS are now outside the toolshop. (That's why I, and the staff member I asked, could not find them.)

Also noticed that it's been months since I've seen a Triton demo anywhere - are they still being done? (Checked Triton Website - appears to now be about every 3 months?)

Unfortunately, the Bosch has surpassed everything I have asked of it ... so I can't take it back now and buy a Triton ROS. Also found top quality sanding pads (velcro) for $0.66 inc GST. I'm on a winner.

Stuart you won't believe it ... through a strange twist in fate ... I now also own a Triton ROS and Steel Cutter. The steel cutter is brilliant. I'll start a new thread in the appropriate place when I can organise some photos.

    Heh heh heh.........karma..........

How did you manage that though - just out of curiosity?

The steel cutter is superb - I just want to source a lump of 50x50 solid mild steel to try it out! (RHS just isn't enough of a test - it eats that way too easily!) - See the latest House & Home magazine for my review of the steel cutter.

    Hi Stuart,

Check out the Triton Website and click on the Steel Cutter video 3.1Mb. Check out the credits - well done David Watkins (wherever He is now) for producing this little video gem.

See 50 x 50 solid cut in 20 seconds on a Triton Steel Cutter (and the mess that cutting with an abrasive wheel makes), safer cleaner, repeatable accurate cuts ... and the cost. More than 4,500 cuts in 30 x 30 x 1.6mm tube with one $79 blade. Versus 210 cuts from the best abrasive cut off disk. [this equates to less than $3.69/abrasive disk ... hmmm ... they don't sell the that cheap ]

After using for a few days I'm converted from thinking 'what a distraction for Triton' to .... 'bring on more distractions just like it!'

    Best regards,

    Interwood (and steel with Triton)

    Interwood,

I have checked with our guys in WA and found out the following.
Bunnings Willeton stock only "C" graded products and all Triton products have been "S" graded by Bunnings hence no Triton in Bunninsg Willeton.

Carba-Tec are now keeping the Random Orbital Sander so is in stock now.

Bunnings Melville have their Triton outside the toolshop counter in their hire shop. The individual Triton products have also been cut into the pertinent bays eg Circ saws with Circ saws. The Triton bay has been re layed and should have most lines available.

Triton demos are happening regularly in WA - please check the Triton website for demonstration times and dates.

I hope this helps Interwood and I apologise for the delay in replying.
