Default Triton random orbital sander disintegrates

Edit: this is the angle grinder attachment type not the new standalone one.

Title says it all. I was using mine this afternoon and the foam disintegrated.

    Is this common ?

Can it be bought as a spare and is is worth repairing ? I quite like it in use but, well bits flying everywhere was a bit of an eye opener...

Also thinking of a power plane. Any thoughts on brands etc ? I know nothing about them but went to use my hand plane this afternoon and it was dull. Didn't have time to sharpen it so moved on to the sanders. Very annoying... (it was late and I just wanted to take a lick off the blackwood I got today and look at the grain.)

Need a holiday. And another wood show to buy the stuff I should have the other week....

I made a post earlier this year after having the same issue with a Makita ROS. It cost a fortune to replace - $60. Please let us know how much the Triton is to replace.

EDIT: Just saw your clarification. Not sure if the angle grinder type can be replaced, Stuart might be able to help here.

After I posted I fond the spares sheet at tritons web site. It specifically says that the foam pad is a consumable item. I'm calling bunnings this morning to add it to my list of bits.

Had a bit of a frustrating afternoon yesterday.

    Hi Damien

Had the same thing happen a few months ago. Foam pad was a few years old but had not had much use. Must break down over time. One thing I did notice is that the newer pads are rated at 11 000 rpm where i think the older one was only 10 000rpm.

I was able to get spare pad from bunnings special orders around $35 give or take a few dollars.

    Cheers

Holy $35 batman! I won't be paying that. If it's $35 for a new one it'll be getting binned, unless someone here wants it.

    Hi Damien

I could be wrong...I don't have the receipt close by....but I am pretty sure it was around that price....I do remember thinking it was a bit expensive when i ordered it....probably best to check with bunnings special orders before binning it!!

    Cheers

Sounds about right price wise. Surprised if any Bunnings carries them any more given how much of the range they are dropping.

They used to be a spare on the shelf. Actually, given the current Bunnings clearout, I wonder if any have made their way to the sales tables? You might get one for a song (depending on the quality of your voice)

I had mine seperate from the metal spindle and the head skip across the yard about five years ago. I was lucky though as triton replaced the whole thing. Thing might be a bit different now that trtion are not who they used to be.

I had the same thing happened when I first got it. Triton replaced the whole unit for me as well. I was lucky the spindle did not get thrown like yours did. But it was pretty scary when it disintegrated - threw bits of it everywhere. It is still my favourite sander...i just treat it with a bit more respect now

Exactly the same thing happened to mine - albeit after a few years good service. The bearing housing also started to grumble shortly before it pooped itself completely - solution a new Bosch Orbnital Sander - all good!

    $33.73. That's too much I think.

Anyone want a defective triton random orbital sander attachment ?

It was a nice thing while it was working...
